Volunteer Spotlight: Janet Woods
After 40 years in the insurance industry, retirement gave Janet Woods an opportunity to find a new way to give back. In 2017, she joined the Oaklawn Auxiliary looking for something that would not require too much of her time but would still allow her to be helpful to others. What began as a way to stay involved has grown into nearly a decade of meaningful service.
Since joining, Janet has volunteered in a variety of roles, including blood drives, the information desk, fundraising, and the Auxiliary's beloved popcorn program. Today, she serves as the Fundraising Committee Chair and co-chair of the Popcorn program, helping organize these efforts and keep them going strong.
While Janet enjoys the many ways she can contribute, her favorite part of volunteering is simple: the people. She finds fulfillment in helping others and seeing the positive response from those she encounters. At the information desk, Janet helps patients and visitors navigate Oaklawn, many of whom may be visiting for the first time and are unsure where to go. She understands that arriving at a hospital can be stressful, and she takes pride in helping make the experience a little easier. She also enjoys seeing how much staff look forward to Thursday popcorn, a small tradition that brings plenty of smiles to Oaklawn.
Her commitment to service extends beyond the Auxiliary. She also volunteers with the Moose in Marshall, where she helps organize fundraising efforts, including an annual golf outing. Through both organizations, Janet has seen firsthand how volunteers can bring people together and make a meaningful difference in the community.
Janet believes the Auxiliary is especially valuable because hospital auxiliaries like Oaklawn's have become less common since COVID-19. As the Auxiliary continues to rebuild and grow, she hopes more people will become involved and discover the rewards that come from serving others.
We are grateful for Janet's years of dedication, leadership, kindness, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Thank you, Janet, for all you do to support Oaklawn, our patients and staff, and the greater Marshall community!
