The weather lately has been.. a bit warm🥴 so it can at sometimes leave you at a loss of what to do with your horses.

I know for me, personally, I always looked forward to the warmer days so I could enjoy my horses, but then always came the challenge of what to do when it was too warm. I often felt guilty that they were getting time off because they got most of winter off, but I, obviously, didn’t want them getting sick in the heat either. I always needed to remind myself to take a step back and remember where I needed to put my focus. Instead of being let down it was too hot to do anything, I needed to look at where the holes in our routines were and work on those things instead of jumping a course or practicing our dressage test.

I spent a lot of those days doing ground work, pole work in hand, exploring new places and working on making sure my horses had the best ground manners they could.

For so many of us, we were at one point taught to use cool water 💦 to cool down our horse, but then to make sure we immediately scrape it off to make sure the horse stays cool. Dr. Marlin, a thermoregulation specialist, researched differently!

When we put water on our horses, there is often a conduction of heat from the horse to the water, which is why the water often becomes warm. Dr. Marlin studied that when there are two bodies in contact, they often transfer heat 🥵 to become the same temperature, which is what is taking place when the heat from the horse is leaving the horse and heating the cool water that we are placing on them! As a result, the cool water is absorbing the heat from the horse, removing it from the horse, allowing the horse’s temperature to drop!

In the summer, this means scraping a hot horse is actually slowing the cooling process, taking the conduction property of the water away. However, in the winter, it is important to scrape the horse when using water, as the cool water will cool the horse’s body temperature to match the water, inadvertently making the horse colder!🥶

The summer weather has finally arrived and it has been HOT🥵. If you were in a barn, you know for sure what I mean!

Although summer brings so much joy and opportunity in the horse world, the summer brings its own sets of concerns for the horses.

You should always be very mindful of the temperature, but also the humidity index. This can really affect you and your horse’s ability to breathe well, as cool yourself down. I promise, trying to squeeze that 1 extra ride in or putting your horse in a stall with poor ventilation, is not the best answer. 🌡️

The best time to work with horses this time of year is early morning or later in the evening! Which do you prefer? Which does your horse prefer?

Often times we can’t predict an emergency, but we can be prepared for them as best we can! If you know horses, you know they will find all sorts of ways to get themselves in trouble and that is always the moment you are away from your supply kit, out of town or in a rush to get somewhere 🥴

I have learned my lesson over the years to always have a my medical supply kit full, ready and reachable because… horses!

What is one thing in your emergency kit you don’t think you would want to go without?!

Just as most of us, our horses don’t always love seeing the vet. It can make things really challenging, especially in the event of an actual medical emergency. Not to mention, even if there isn’t an emergency and your horse isn’t being super cooperative, it can put yourself, your horse and your vet in harm’s way unintentionally.

Behaving poorly for the vet is something I so commonly see get ignored and not addressed behaviorally because let’s face it, you forget your horse hates needles until needles come out or you forget they hate their chest touched until someone they don’t know touches it instead of ignoring it like you🥴

Good news! You CAN work with your horse everyday doing simple things to improve their time encountering the vet. You SHOULD work with your horse to improve their time encountering the vet.

After all, the point is to just keep your horse happy, healthy and safe, but your vet also needs to stay happy, healthy and safe😉

If you have an emergency with your horse, one of the first things your vet is going to ask you for are the TPR values.

What are these?
🌡️Temperature
🩺Pulse
😮‍💨Respiration

Although in the moment of stress it can be easy to forget to take your horse’s vitals or you may even forget what the normal rate is, it is important you know how to take them, as well as have an idea of normal ranges so you can help your vet help your horse accurately!

Keeping a handy print out of normal ranges at easy reach in the tack room, feed room or even on your horse’s stall is a great little tool in the moment of emergency!

We’ve all been there. You and your horse can’t seem to get on the same terms no matter what or how hard you try. One day everything was fine and the next, it’s as if you both speak entirely different languages out of the clear blue.

As frustrating as it is, your horse is just trying to communicate something is off and you just haven’t quite nailed the shoe on yet, if you know what I mean. It can be a rabbit hole for sure, but you’ll get there. Slow and steady.

I have been there, so many of my friends have been there and I wanted to share what boxes we started checking to find the right paths to go down to come out of the rabbit hole.

Something I will always live by is that owners know their horse best. If your gut is telling you something is off with your horse, something probably is.

For many of us, how we approach this can look vastly different, but we should never shame someone for getting them or their horse help.

So if you have ever got your horse help and been made to feel a certain way about it.. this is for you & just know that I am proud of you for getting the help💗
