Therapy Thursday đź’ˇ

One important skill we work on in ABA is building sustained attention skills.

Sustained attention is the ability to stay focused and engaged on a task over time. This is an important skill for success in both educational and future vocational settings.

For younger children, this may look like:
• Completing table activities
• Listening during group instruction
• Staying engaged during learning tasks
• Finishing simple routines or chores

As children get older, sustained attention becomes important for:
• Following multi step directions
• Completing school assignments
• Participating in vocational tasks
• Working independently for longer periods of time

At Bright Futures ABA, we help build these skills gradually by:
• Making learning engaging
• Reinforcing effort and participation
• Slowly increasing expectations over time

Small increases in focus today can lead to greater independence tomorrow.

Therapy Thursday đź’ˇ

One important skill we work on in ABA is intraverbal language.

Intraverbals are the skills involved in having conversations, answering questions, filling in blanks, and responding to others without seeing the item in front of you.

Examples:
“What do you wear on your feet?” → “Shoes”
“Twinkle, twinkle little…” → “Star”

For young children, one of the best ways to build intraverbal skills is through nursery rhymes, songs, and repetitive play routines.

Singing favorite songs together helps children learn:
Turn taking in conversation
Listening skills
Word associations
How to respond to verbal language

Simple games like pausing before the last word in a song and letting your child fill it in can make learning fun and natural.

At Bright Futures ABA, we focus on building communication skills in ways that are engaging, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate for every child.

Therapy Thursday đź’ˇ

One of the biggest goals in ABA is teaching functionally equivalent replacement behaviors, or in simpler terms, teaching a better behavior that meets the same need.

Every behavior happens for a reason. A child may be trying to get attention, ask for help, escape a task, or access something they want.

Instead of only focusing on stopping the challenging behavior, we teach a more appropriate way to communicate that same need.

For example:

Instead of throwing items to escape a task, teaching “I need a break”

Instead of yelling for attention, teaching how to appropriately ask for attention

The replacement behavior has to work better and faster for the child than the challenging behavior.

At Bright Futures ABA, we focus on teaching skills that help children communicate effectively, build independence, and succeed across home, school, and the community.

St. Louis,

We’ve heard the need from families and we’re making it happen.

Bright Futures ABA is introducing a new After School ABA Program starting July/August 2026 for children up to 16 years old.

Running from 5:00pm–7:00pm at our South County location at 10007 Kennerly Road, this program focuses on building practical, everyday skills like social engagement, communication, independence, and behavior regulation.

This is a structured, center-based program designed to complement the school day and help kids generalize skills across settings.

We currently have no waitlist, which means families can begin the intake process immediately.

Therapy Thursday đź’ˇ

If your child struggles with transitions or unexpected behaviors, a structured schedule can make a big difference.

When the day feels unpredictable, kids are more likely to become frustrated or overwhelmed. A clear routine helps take away that uncertainty.

Instead of guessing what’s next, your child knows what to expect.

This can look like:
A consistent morning routine
Set times for meals and activities
A clear bedtime routine

You can also use visual schedules, timers, or simple verbal reminders to help guide transitions.

The goal isn’t to have a perfect schedule, it’s to create consistency.

At Bright Futures ABA, we use structured routines to help kids feel more in control of their day, which leads to better behavior and more independence over time.

Ever notice how starting something is the hardest part for a lot of kids?

That’s where behavior momentum comes in.

Behavior momentum means building up a series of easy, successful responses before asking a child to do something more challenging.

We start with a few simple directions the child is likely to follow, then move into the harder task.

Why this works:

It builds confidence
Creates a pattern of success
Reduces refusal and frustration

At Bright Futures ABA, we use this strategy to help kids get “on a roll” so they’re more likely to stay engaged and follow through.

Small wins lead to bigger ones.

Therapy Thursday: What is extinction in ABA?

Extinction means we stop reinforcing a behavior that has worked in the past. If a child gets attention, a break, or access to something through a behavior, that behavior is more likely to continue.

When we use extinction, we no longer let that behavior “work.”

But here’s what’s just as important:

We don’t stop there. We pair it with positive reinforcement.

That means:
1. Don’t reinforce the challenging behavior
2. Wait for appropriate communication
3. Then immediately reinforce the positive behavior

This is how people learn a better way to get their needs met.

At Bright Futures ABA, we focus on teaching what to do, not just what to stop doing.
