Love introducing sand and water play in therapy! Today we did a car and boat wash and ocean/sea creatures themed play, paired with books to boost those language skills!

Messy hands, growing communication skills🫶🏼Sensory play supports speech, language, learning, and connection through play-based exploration. From building vocabulary and following directions to practicing turn-taking and communication, some of the best learning happens when children are engaged, curious, and having fun.

So much language in one simple activity- Cars and my favorite blue track! 🚗💬

Playing with cars and tracks can target:
• Expressive language (words + short phrases)
• Receptive language (following directions, concepts)
• Social skills (turn-taking, joint attention)
• Play skills (cause/effect, pretend play)
• Speech sounds (beep, vroom, go!)

Play isn’t “just play” — it’s how kids learn best. 💛

chances are something magical happened here. ✨

Play is powerful.
Connection builds communication.
And this past week we had a LOT of both.

We had plenty of magic.

Every toy, every game, every silly moment was building:

❄️Sensory Snow Play- Grab a bin and bring the snow indoors!

Targets:
Vocabulary -wet, cold, soft, white, fluffy, icy, snowflake
Action Words: scoop, dump, build, melt, pack, pour

You can say:
“Cold snow”
“More snow”
“So fluffy/white/cold”
“It’s melting!”
“Big/small/round snowball”

❄️Build a mini snowman inside using actual snow, marshmallows, play-doh or cotton balls!

Targets:
Body parts: head, body, eyes, nose, mouth
Prepositions: on, on top, under, above, stack up
Following directions: put the hat on, make a nose/eyes/mouth, roll the snow

❄️Making hot cocoa- Real or pretend!

Mugs/toy mugs/spoons, marshmallows/cotton balls
Targets:
Vocabulary: pour, stir, drink, mix, hot, warm, marshmallows, yummy, more please, all done

Following 1-2 step directions: pour water, pour packet, pour water and mix packet, stir then add marshmallows

Sequencing: First-Next-Last. Discussing the steps in making hot cocoa
