Going through cancer treatment, or watching someone you love go through it, can be exhausting.

Between chemo, radiation, and medication, eating can suddenly feel like a chore rather than a comfort.

Nausea, metallic tastes, and a disappearing appetite can make ""healthy eating"" advice feel totally out of reach.

If you or a loved one are in the thick of treatment right now, give yourself permission to let go of rigid food rules. Nutrition during this season isn't about eating the ""perfect"" meal; it's about finding gentle, manageable ways to keep the body nourished and comfortable.

Here are 3 practical, shame-free tips for navigating common treatment side effects:
🔹 Cool & Calm for Nausea: Hot foods release stronger aromas, which can trigger nausea. Try cold or room-temperature options instead, like chilled fruit smoothies, plain crackers, or cold grain salads.

🔹 Brighten Taste Changes: A lingering metallic taste is common during treatment. Switching to bamboo or plastic utensils can help, and adding lemon juice, citrus zest, or tart berries to water and meals can cut through dull or metallic flavors.

🔹 Think ""Grazing"" Over Full Meals: When appetite is low, a full plate can feel intimidating. Instead, focus on small, energy-dense snacks every 2–3 hours—like peanut butter on toast, avocado slices, or a cup of full-fat yogurt.

Every bite counts, no matter how small. And above all, extend yourself (or your loved one) endless grace on the days when eating feels hard. 💛

Ever feel like your brain is running on low battery by mid-week? 🔋

October isn't just about pumpkin spice; it's also Depression Education & Awareness Month and Emotional Wellness Month. Mental health is complex and personal, but here's something worth knowing: the food on your plate plays a real role in how you feel from the inside out.

Enter: Salmon 🐟, one of nature's best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids (specifically EPA and DHA).

Here's how Omega-3s support your brain:
🧠 Builds brain cell membranes: Your brain is nearly 60% fat, and DHA is a key structural building block for brain cells.
🔥 Calms cellular inflammation: EPA helps combat neuroinflammation, which research increasingly links to mood shifts and depressive symptoms.
😊 Supports ""feel-good"" neurotransmitters: Omega-3s help cell membranes stay fluid, making it easier for serotonin and dopamine to travel where they need to go.

To be clear: nutrition isn't a replacement for mental health care. But it is a foundational tool that can help you feel more grounded and focused.

💬 How do you like to cook your salmon: Pan-seared, air-fried, or baked?

05/15/2020

“I have had lupus for 15 years. Along with regular doctor appointments and medication, I think the best thing I did for myself was to learn about nutrition and follow a well balanced eating plan. I want my body to be as healthy as possible so I can live my best life with lupus and the more I learned the more I knew nutrition was the key to that. A good diet not only could help me keep my organs healthy, it also improves my energy levels and sleep and combats some of the lousy side effects of medication. I felt so passionate about it I planned on going back to school to become an RD... but when that didn't work out, I found the next best thing and started working for a team of RDs!” ⁣
⁣
This comes directly from one of our hardworking administrators, Janice (check out the the 2nd photo to see her lovely smile!), who also lives with lupus. May is Lupus Awareness Month and today is Put on Purple Day! ⁣
⁣
We wear purple to raise awareness and rally support so lupus gets the attention it deserves. The RDs & staff of Nutrition HealthWorks put on purple to join the cause. We invite you to do the same! 💜
