It doesn’t matter if it happens completely by surprise or you’ve watched the day coming… that phone call still takes the wind right out of you. 💔
Yesterday, we got one of those calls.
We lost someone who has been incredibly special to our Cornerstone family for years. And somehow, saying “a client passed away” just doesn’t feel like enough… because somewhere along the way, they became so much more than a client.
One of our caregivers has spent years walking alongside this individual and their family. Countless hours. Ordinary days and really hard ones. Conversations, laughter, tears, celebrations, quiet moments… and probably a million little memories that only they will ever fully understand. 💙
That’s the beautiful part of caregiving.
You walk through the door to provide care. You learn their routines, their stories, their favorite things, what makes them smile and what makes a hard day a little easier.
And somewhere in all of those hours together, you become family.
We talk a lot about how much our caregivers pour into the people they care for, but I don’t think we talk nearly enough about how much our clients and their families pour right back into them.
The relationships are real. The love is real. And so is the heartbreak when it’s time to say goodbye.
Today, my heart is with a family grieving someone they love so deeply, but it’s also with our caregiver who is grieving someone who became part of her family too.
There’s no clocking out of a relationship like that. And there’s no care plan that can prepare your heart for goodbye.
What an incredible privilege it is to be trusted with someone’s care, to be welcomed into their home, and ultimately to become a small piece of their story.
Rest peacefully. You were cared for. You were loved. And you will absolutely be missed. 💙
This is the part of caregiving that reminds us—it was never “just a job.” It’s people loving and caring for people, and sometimes those people become family. 💙
