Few accepted abstracts receive the Presidential Poster Award at the American College of Gastroenterology Annual Scientific Meeting.

Internal Medicine Resident, Dr. Prince Shah-Riar, earned two of these awards in Nashville, placing both abstracts among the 5-7% recognized each year.

His first project, “Diagnostic Accuracy of Circulating Tumor DNA for Predicting Colorectal Cancer Recurrence After Curative-Intent Resection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,” examined the potential of circulating tumor DNA to help identify colorectal cancer recurrence and guide surveillance.

His second, “EUS-Guided Cholecystoduodenostomy for Hemorrhagic Cholecystitis With Clot-Related Stent Dysfunction,” explored the use of advanced therapeutic endoscopy in a complex case of hemorrhagic cholecystitis.

DHR Health was also represented by Internal Medicine Residents, Dr. Chowdhury Shahriar, Dr. Muhammad Osama Saeed, Dr. Hector Trejo, and Dr. Iffath Mizan, alongside Gastroenterology Fellows, Dr. Rodolfo Singleterry, Dr. Rishika Trivedi, and Dr. Mahmoud Barbarawi, and Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director, Dr. Asif Zamir.

Every month brings another chance for our Orthopaedic Surgery residents to sharpen their skills.

Through monthly surgical skills simulation dry labs, residents get consistent hands-on time with different technology, techniques, and training scenarios as they continue building their surgical experience.

For this month’s session, residents trained with the RPM 1000 alongside Orthopaedic Surgery Program Director, Dr. Kip Owen, putting their skills to the test with a little friendly competition along the way.

When VA-ECMO restores circulation, does that mean tissue perfusion has truly been restored?

That critical question was at the center of research presented by DHR Health Cardiovascular Disease Fellow Dr. Jathniel Panneflek at the 37th Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

His research, “Venous-to-Arterial PCO2 Gap and Outcomes in Adult VA-ECMO,” examined whether a frequently overlooked physiologic marker could provide additional insight into tissue perfusion and patient outcomes during mechanical circulatory support.

Through a systematic review of four studies involving approximately 269 patients, the research identified an association between persistently elevated venous-to-arterial CO2 gaps and increased mortality.

The findings highlight an important clinical distinction: restoring blood flow does not always guarantee adequate perfusion at the tissue level. Monitoring the CO2 gap may offer an additional tool for recognizing persistent circulatory dysfunction and assessing prognosis in critically ill patients.

At DHR Health, exposure to advanced cardiovascular care creates opportunities for fellows to investigate complex clinical questions, contribute to scientific research, and advance the understanding of care for patients requiring life-sustaining therapies.

The more ground you cover in training, the more you can bring to your patients.

That’s why our Family Medicine residents train across inpatient, outpatient, and community-based care.

As they work alongside founding Program Director, Dr. Naomi D’Acolatse, and dedicated staff including Behavioral Health Specialist, Daira Rodriguez, residents learn from professionals who bring decades of experience directly into their development.

That guidance prepares our residents to become confident, family medicine physicians, ready to care for patients across different stages of life and clinical settings.

This is the kind of training you want to be in the room for.

During a recent cadaver lab, our General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care trainees received hands-on education in burn and trauma care, working through ReCell application, skin debridement, harvesting and meshing, and rib plating while getting a closer look at how these techniques are approached in practice.

Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Burn Care Surgeon, Dr. R. Dewayne Edwards, brought his experience directly into the session, giving trainees the chance to learn these techniques from someone who applies that expertise in patient care every day.

Our fellows are taking their research into the conversations advancing hematologic oncology.

Dr. Mariana Marrero Castillo recently presented a research abstract at the SOHO 2026 Annual Meeting in Houston, where thousands of physicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals gathered to share the latest work in hematologic malignancies.

In her abstract, “Hematological Disease and Outcomes of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Among Adults With Hematologic Malignancies: A National ECMO Recipient Registry Analysis, 2016-2022,” she presented that ECMO outcomes varied by diagnosis, with patients who had MDS/MPN showing the strongest survival outcomes, as about 64% survived their hospitalization.

At DHR Health, fellowship gives our trainees the chance to bring their research to a national audience, learn from the experts shaping the field, and see how their own work can contribute to what comes next.

DHR Health prepares you for any moment, in any environment.

Surgical Critical Care Program Director, Dr. Jeffrey Skubic, led a Tactical Combat Casualty Care course alongside Surgical Critical Care Fellow, Dr. Juan Garces Uribe, and Emergency Medicine Resident, Dr. Abdul Hakim.

They worked through immersive trauma scenarios, gaining hands-on experience managing severe bleeding, airway emergencies, and other time-sensitive injuries in high-stress environments where immediate medical support may be limited.

Experiences like this push trainees beyond the routine and prepare them for the situations that demand the most from them.

The path from residency to fellowship starts in the classroom.

At DHR Health, Internal Medicine residents are already learning alongside Gastroenterology fellows, giving them a closer look at where their training can take them next.

During a session led by our Gastroenterology Fellowship Associate Program Director, Dr. Juan Sanchez, who is also a gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopy specialist, residents and fellows explored the diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia and how to approach it in patient care.

For residents considering what comes after Internal Medicine, experiences like this bring the next level of training closer and gives them a chance to start now.

At DHR Health, our urology residents are developed with a purpose.

That purpose is to prepare each one of them to become a well-rounded physician who excels within their specialty.

Urology Program Director, Dr. Gaudencio Olgin, brings his experience as a minimally invasive urologic surgeon directly into these hands-on training sessions and resident development.

When you are choosing where to train, that kind of involvement matters. The people setting the expectations for your training are also there to help you meet them.

By senior year, our residents are ready to take the lead.

Internal Medicine Chief Resident, Dr. Laura Alicia Castro, opened this year’s Senior Grand Rounds with a presentation titled “The Three-Hit Model: Drug-Induced Hyponatremia in the Elderly.”

Through a case-based approach, she showed her fellow residents how multiple medications can contribute to hyponatremia in older adults and why thoughtful medication review matters in patient care.

“The best medicine begins with curiosity, understanding not only what we treat, but why it happens and how we can do better for the patients we serve,” said Dr. Castro.

Originally from the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. Castro is passionate about primary care, preventive medicine, and improving the health of the community she calls home.
