Nut foraging at Trothwood Forest.

Shagbark Hickory. Look for peeling bark. The husks split when ripe. Sweet nutmeat.

Black Walnut. Dark ridged bark. Green husks that stain. Rich, earthy flavor.

Harvest late summer through fall. Husk, dry, and crack. Good in oatmeal, bannock, or as a trail snack.

Take only what you need. Leave plenty for the animals. Positive identification is essential before consuming.

The woods here are full of them.
