A family history of breast cancer can increase your risk—but it does NOT mean you are destined to develop breast cancer.
And breastfeeding is one factor that has been associated with a lower risk of breast cancer. Research has found that the longer a woman breastfeeds over her lifetime, the greater the potential reduction in risk.
And for women with certain genetic risks, including BRCA1, research has also found a protective association with breastfeeding.
But let’s be clear: breastfeeding does not erase genetic risk, and it isn’t a guarantee that you won’t develop breast cancer. Regular screenings, knowing your family history, and talking with your healthcare provider about genetic counseling when appropriate still matter.
So if breast cancer runs in your family, don’t let that history make you think breastfeeding is pointless.
Your family history is part of your story—not necessarily your destiny. 🤎
