40 Years at Meininger Chiropractic
Tomorrow, April 14th, marks a milestone I once thought impossible: Meininger Chiropractic is officially 40 years old. If you had told me back in 1986 that I would still be coming into the office and serving this community after four decades, I would have told you that you were crazy. Yet, here we are. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to see this practice grow and to remain a part of your health journey for forty incredible years.
I still remember patient “numero uno.” She walked in with that look we see all the time… lower back, pain shooting all the way down her leg and “that big toe is numb.” I’ve seen it before with my previous employer, Dr. Ben Corrington. But this time, something was different. My name was on the door. I knew it was gonna have to be me laying my hands on her and getting her well. With God’s help I gave her that first adjustment, felt that spine move, and I knew; we were officially in business.
It’s been a wild ride since then, a roller coaster to be exact. I seriously thank Esther, my wife. I am very grateful for such a beautiful woman inspired by God as my helpmate. She was and still is my biggest supporter. Literally, she directed the office and raised five kids at the same time. Without her, it would have been a disaster. Throughout the years, we had 7 different presidents in the White House. We saw the standard 80%-20% insurance where everyone was in network compared to the now; very strict managed care with extremely low reimbursement and “you must have approvals” to be seen. Our practice was what you’d call a family practice. We’ve treated over 15,000 patients, the very young to the very old and multitudes in between. Tons of car accident and sports-related injuries as well. We took care of everyone and everything. We saw so many that I had to recover the adjustment tables six times! That’s a lot of people getting better, and a lot of wear and tear on the vinyl.
It wasn’t always easy. We’ve had some disasters that definitely weren't in any chiropractic textbooks. The county bought our old building on Atlanta Street out from under us, so we had to find a new spot. Then there were the three floods—pipes bursting and us trying to dry out X-ray films on clotheslines before they were ruined. And the two rats! Well, I caught one on the security camera, and let’s just say he didn’t have an appointment. The occupants above us were raided for narcotics. A full building lockdown with S.W.A.T. in our parking lot. What a day that was!
We’ve worked through the scariest of times during 9/11, the uncertainty of COVID, and moving from the old X-ray machine to the new digital stuff. We had to buy a new ultrasound unit because we used it so much that it started smoking and went through a dozen or so e-stim units. We still have some original equipment and you ask, why… because they just don’t make stuff the way they used to. What we learned: never take life for granted. I’ve had my own health issues as well. I survived a heart attack and cancer of the prostate. It gave me a whole new perspective on what my patients are going through when they hurt.
Now, we are just waiting on the State DOT to finally finish widening the road out front so you can actually get into the parking lot! But through the floods, the health scares, and the moves, we’re still here… helping as many people as possible in their quest to get well.
So, forty years and counting, 15,000 patients later... To God be the glory. Can you believe it? We’re still going! Enuf said.
