Where do we get such men?
For me, Memorial Day is the most complex day of the year. I am conflicted. The day is certainly first and foremost a day to honor and remember those that sacrificed ALL for the freedoms that we enjoy. The quote “Where do we get such men?” always comes to my mind. It humbles me and yet it inspires me to know that these men and women come from all over our nation. They are our neighbors, friends, and our family. They are all ordinary until they are called upon, then they become extraordinary! For me, it is a solemn day, at least in part. I think of our fallen and their loved ones. I am grateful. I am saddened.
However, the day is also a day of celebration. We should celebrate the very fact that we have Americans willing to lay their lives down to ensure our liberty. We should celebrate the lives they led. We should celebrate those that paid the ultimate price for us.
Today, as you enjoy your cook outs, drink your beer, gather with your friends and families stop and simply remember. Remember that you are able to do these things because another American picked up a rifle, stood a post, drew a line, and refused to let harm come to us on their watch. Even at the highest of cost. God Bless their beautiful souls. Honestly, I don’t think one day is enough. We should REMEMBER everyday!
