September always sneaks up on us, doesn't it?

One week the kids are sleeping in and eating popsicles at noon — and the next, we're packing lunches at 6 a.m. and wondering why everyone is suddenly so cranky.

Here's what we want parents to know: that crankiness? It's real, and it's normal. The shift back to structure affects sleep cycles, digestion, mood, and behavior — sometimes all at once.
What to watch for in the first few weeks of fall:
More meltdowns or emotional outbursts than usual
Stomachaches in the morning (often anxiety, not illness)
Trouble falling asleep even when tired
Increased hunger or decreased appetite
Most kids adjust within 2–3 weeks. But if you're seeing persistent symptoms — or something just feels off — that's exactly what we're here for. At Zest, there's always time to talk it through.

💬 Questions about your child's adjustment? Text us directly — no nurse triage line, no waiting. That's the Zest difference.

August is almost over. School is almost here. And whether you have a 5-year-old or a 17-year-old, your family deserves a real reset — not just new supplies and an alarm clock.
Zest Pediatric’s framework works at every age:
SLEEP: 10–12 hrs for ages 5–9 · 9–11 for 10–12 · 8–10 for teens.
NUTRITION: Protein at breakfast improves focus and reduces anxiety from kindergarten through senior year
MENTAL HEALTH: Have the conversation — what are they looking forward to? What are they nervous about? The answer changes at 6, 11, and 16 — but the question matters at every age.
GUT HEALTH: A daily probiotic through September supports immunity and mood in children of all ages
SCREENS: Phones out of bedrooms at night. For 5–10 year olds, no screens 60 min before bed. For teens, that AND no social media after 9pm.
MOVEMENT: 60 minutes of physical activity daily (ages 5–17 — this is the official recommendation AND it works)
CONNECTION: Family dinners 3x/week. It matters more than most parents realize. We know you are busy and weekdays can feel like chaos. Make it a top priority for your family, anyhow.
A healthy school year starts right here, right now.

Concussion Awareness: What Every Athlete Must Know
Whether your child is 5 and just started soccer or 17 and playing varsity football — concussion awareness matters at every level.
Here's what Zest wants every sports family to know:
- You do NOT need to lose consciousness to have a concussion
- Symptoms can appear hours after the impact — not just immediately
- Young, developing brains (ages 5–17) take LONGER to recover than adult brains
- Returning to play too soon is dangerous at any age. Often, if you return too soon, your symptoms are likely to return AND can last for MONTHS!
Age-specific notes:
Elementary School: Can't always describe their symptoms — watch for behavior changes, clinginess, refusing to play, being more teary than usual.
Middle School: Peer pressure to 'tough it out' is real — teach them it's safe to speak up
High School: Academic pressure + concussion = a dangerous combination. Cognitive rest matters too.
Signs at any age: headache, confusion, nausea, light/noise sensitivity, mood changes, fatigue
If you suspect it → remove from play, call us, do not return without physician clearance.

The Most Important School Supply You're Not Buying
Backpacks? ✔️
School supplies? ✔️
New shoes? ✔️
But the most important thing your child needs this school year isn't on a shopping list—it's sleep.
As pediatricians, we see it every August: summer bedtimes linger, but school mornings come early. Sleep affects far more than energy—it supports learning, memory, mood, immune health, and emotional regulation.
Zest's sleep recommendations by age:
Ages 5–9: 10–12 hours/night
Ages 10–12: 9–11 hours/night
Teens (13–17): 8–10 hours/night
A few simple tips:
✔ Start shifting bedtime earlier now—10–15 minutes every few nights.
✔ Turn off screens at least 60 minutes before bed.
✔ Keep wake-up times consistent, even on weekends.
A well-rested child is better prepared to learn, grow, and thrive. If sleep has been a struggle, your Zest pediatrician is here to help.

Fall Sports Season: Is Your Child Ready?
From first-time soccer players to varsity athletes — fall sports season is here!
Here’s Zest’s pre-season checklist works across ages 5 to 17:
Sports physical DONE — required for school athletics (middle & high school), recommended for all ages
Hydration: kids 5–12 need 6–8 cups daily; teen athletes need significantly more — start before practice, not during
Heat acclimatization: bodies at EVERY age need 10–14 days to adjust to August practice temps — first two weeks should be lower intensity
Sleep: ages 5–12 need 9–11 hours; teens need 8–10 — sleep IS athletic performance
Protein at every meal — especially important for growing athletes ages 10–17
Concussion awareness: teach your child at every age what to report and that it's safe to speak up
The habits built before the season starts protect athletes all the way through.
Sports physicals available now — book before August fills!

Back-to-School Anxiety Is Real — Here's What to Do
A 5-year-old clings at drop-off. A 10-year-old complains of stomach aches every morning. A 16-year-old goes quiet and withdrawn.
Back-to-school anxiety shows up differently across ages — but it's real at every stage from kindergarten to senior year.

Zest’s age-by-age guide:
Early Elementary: Separation anxiety, clinginess, tears at drop-off → Extra transition time, a special goodbye ritual, lots of reassurance

Late Elementary: Stomach aches, sleep trouble, worry about fitting in → Validate feelings, problem-solve together, maintain routine

Middle School: Social anxiety, fear of judgment, middle school stress → Listen without minimizing, don't rush to fix it

High School: Performance pressure, identity, college stress → Normalize struggle, watch for isolation or mood changes

At any age: if anxiety is significantly disrupting daily life, let's talk. That's exactly what your Zest Pediatrician is for. 💕

One phrase to know: if there are deer, there likely are ticks. But also, know this: Lyme transmission isn’t immediate, so doing a tick check every 24 hours is your safest strategy. Even if you find a tick, so long as it has been attached less than 24 hours, the likelihood of lyme transmission is pretty small.

Yes, DEET is safe for kids — the percentage changes how long it lasts, not how strong it is

Ticks love the spots you'd never think to look, so don't rush the check

Found one? Tweezers, straight out, no twisting or burning or petroleum jelly tricks.

Find a tick and you really aren’t sure how long it has been there? Call us. There are specific guidelines we follow on how to manage tick bites and we will walk you through it and provide prophylactic antibiotics when appropriate. You’ve got this!

Kids are terrible at knowing when they're overheating. They'll play right through it because stopping means the fun ends — so the job of noticing falls to us. A few things I've learned that aren't obvious:
By the time a kid says they're thirsty, they're already behind. Offer water before they ask.

Little ones and heavy, sweaty athletes overheat faster than you'd expect — keep a closer eye on them.

A cranky, flushed, "off" kid coming in from the heat is worth pausing for, not pushing through.

Refer to the cool-down checklist. But mostly I want you to trust your gut — if something feels wrong after time outside, call us. You know your kid better than anyone.
