Why Everyone Over 55 Should Be Doing Resistance Training

By James B. Jefferson, M.E.S., C.P.T., C.S.N.

Certified Kinesiologist | Exercise Physiologist | Licensed Wellcoach | Elite Master Trainer
Owner, Medford Core Personal Training & Medford Longevity Center

After nearly 40 years in the fitness, health, and exercise science industry, I have seen one thing become crystal clear:

The difference between aging and aging well often comes down to muscle.

Many people over 55 believe walking, gardening, or staying active around the house is enough to maintain their health. While those activities are beneficial, they are not enough to preserve the strength, muscle mass, bone density, balance, and metabolic health that naturally decline with age.

If there were a medication that could improve strength, reduce falls, increase bone density, improve blood sugar control, enhance mobility, reduce arthritis symptoms, improve mood, and potentially increase lifespan, it would be one of the most prescribed treatments in the world.

That “medication” already exists.

It’s called resistance training.

The Silent Loss of Muscle

Beginning around age 30, adults start losing muscle mass at a gradual rate. After age 50, that loss accelerates. Researchers refer to this age-related muscle loss as sarcopenia.

According to research published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, adults can lose approximately 3-8% of their muscle mass per decade after age 30, with the rate increasing after age 60.

The problem is not just appearance.

Muscle is what allows you to:

* Get off the floor
* Climb stairs
* Carry groceries
* Play with grandchildren
* Maintain independence
* Prevent falls and fractures

When muscle decreases, quality of life often follows.

Strength Training Reduces the Risk of Falls

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury and hospitalization among older adults.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that millions of adults over 65 experience falls each year, often resulting in fractures, disability, and loss of independence.

Research consistently shows that resistance training improves:

* Balance
* Coordination
* Reaction time
* Leg strength
* Functional mobility

In simple terms, stronger people are less likely to fall.

Strong Muscles Mean Strong Bones

Many adults over 55 worry about osteoporosis and fractures.

The good news is that bones respond to resistance training similarly to muscles.

A review published in Osteoporosis International found that properly designed strength-training programs can help maintain and improve bone mineral density in older adults.

Walking is excellent for cardiovascular health, but resistance training provides the mechanical stress bones need to remain strong.

Resistance Training Helps Control Blood Sugar

One of the largest organs involved in blood sugar regulation is muscle.

When muscles contract during resistance exercise, they absorb glucose from the bloodstream and improve insulin sensitivity.

Research from the American Diabetes Association has shown that resistance training can significantly improve blood sugar control and reduce risk factors associated with Type 2 diabetes.

For adults struggling with weight gain, prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome, resistance training is one of the most effective tools available.

Muscle Is the Organ of Longevity

One of the most exciting areas of modern longevity research involves muscle mass and grip strength.

A study published in The Lancet found that grip strength was a stronger predictor of premature death than blood pressure in many populations studied.

Think about that.

A simple measure of strength can tell us more about future health outcomes than some traditional medical markers.

Why?

Because strength reflects the health of multiple body systems, including muscles, nerves, bones, metabolism, and cardiovascular fitness.

Resistance Training Improves Mental Health

Many people think of exercise only in terms of physical appearance.

However, resistance training has been shown to improve:

* Mood
* Confidence
* Stress resilience
* Cognitive function
* Symptoms of anxiety and depression

Research published in JAMA Psychiatry found that resistance exercise training significantly reduced symptoms of depression across multiple populations.

When people feel stronger physically, they often feel stronger mentally as well.

It Is Never Too Late to Start

One of the biggest myths I hear is:

“I’m too old to start lifting weights.”

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Studies involving adults in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s have demonstrated remarkable improvements in strength, balance, mobility, and quality of life after beginning resistance training programs.

The human body remains adaptable throughout life.

You are never too old to become stronger.

The Goal Is Not Bodybuilding

When I work with clients over 55 at Medford Core, our goal is not to create bodybuilders.

Our goals are:

* Better mobility
* More energy
* Reduced pain
* Increased strength
* Improved balance
* Better posture
* Greater independence
* Higher quality of life

Many clients tell me they simply want to keep doing the things they love without needing help from others.

That is exactly what resistance training helps accomplish.

My Professional Recommendation

If you are over 55, I recommend performing resistance training at least two to three times per week under proper supervision and with an individualized program.

Focus on:

* Leg strength
* Core stability
* Upper-body strength
* Balance training
* Functional movement patterns

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is preserving your ability to live life on your own terms.

Final Thoughts

After nearly four decades in the fitness industry, I have seen countless trends come and go.

Yet one truth remains unchanged:

Strength is one of the greatest predictors of health, independence, and longevity.

As we age, we don’t stop exercising because we get old.

We get old because we stop challenging our bodies.

If you are over 55, resistance training is no longer optional.

It is one of the most important investments you can make in your future health, independence, and quality of life.

Why Grip Strength May Be One of the Most Important Predictors of Longevity

By James B. Jefferson, M.E.S., C.P.T., C.S.N.

Over nearly four decades in the fitness, rehabilitation, and wellness industry, I have seen countless trends come and go. Some exercise methods become popular for a few years and disappear. However, there are a handful of measurements that consistently tell us a great deal about a person's health, function, and quality of life.

One of the most overlooked measurements is grip strength.

While many people associate grip strength with athletes, rock climbers, or construction workers, research from leading universities and organizations has shown that grip strength may actually be one of the strongest predictors of overall health, independence, and longevity.

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

Research from leading institutions, including UCLA Health and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, has found strong associations between grip strength and overall health outcomes.

A UCLA Health publication released December 18, 2023, highlighted grip strength as a valuable indicator of overall health. Similarly, an Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center report published April 6, 2022, discussed grip strength as an important marker of physical function and healthy aging.

Research consistently shows that individuals with greater grip strength tend to live longer, maintain independence longer, experience fewer falls, have lower rates of disability, demonstrate better cardiovascular health, maintain higher levels of muscle mass, and recover more effectively from illness and injury.

WHY GRIP STRENGTH MATTERS

1. It Reflects Total Body Strength
2. It Helps Prevent Falls
3. It Supports Healthy Aging
4. It Improves Daily Function
5. It Supports Brain and Nervous System Function

HOW WE TRAIN GRIP STRENGTH AT MEDFORD CORE

My favorite exercises include Farmer's Carries, Dead Hangs, Dumbbell Holds, Kettlebell Carries, Towel Rows or Pull-Ups, and Hand Grippers.

THE LONGEVITY CONNECTION

Strong grip strength is associated with better mobility, greater independence, improved balance, higher quality of life, reduced risk of disability, increased overall strength, and better functional performance.

GET YOUR FREE GRIP STRENGTH TEST

One of the best things about grip strength is that it can be measured quickly, safely, and easily.
