Public Service Announcement regarding

***Actual Breastfeeding Intake***

I’m not a researcher, but…maybe I should consider 🤔

I feel like every family I encounter thinks that babies should be fed 4 oz when taking a bottle 🍼. But in practice, I have rarely seen babies transfer this much volume directly from the breast. 🤱🏻

So, over the past 7 months 📆 I have asked people attending my Breastfeeding Support Group to measure their baby’s intake at the breast with my sensitive infant scale. ⚖️

Across those 14 groups, and 75 possible opportunities to measure measurements, only 41 measurements were recorded- and by that I mean the baby was weighed before and after breastfeeding.

Of those measurements the average intake of milk directly from the breast was 66mL or 2.2 oz

If I remove the 3 instances of diagnosed lactation issues (2 hyperlactation cases and 1 hypolactation case) the average intake still is about the same at 65mL or 2.2 oz

The babies have ranged in age from 2 weeks to 8 months with almost exactly half of these recorded measurements occurring in babies at or less than 3 months (n=21) and the other half 4 months to 8 months (n=20).

Only 11 feeds were at one breast, while the remaining 30 measurements were with from feeding at both breasts.

I don’t know about you,
but I find this fascinating!! 🤩

I’m not saying there is anything wrong with giving a 4 oz bottle to a baby…I’m just wondering if maybe 4 oz intake isn’t the biological “norm”.

I am hopeful that this tiny bit of info may put those who feel like they have a “low breastmilk supply” (aka almost every client I meet) in perspective…

And I would love to hear your thoughts!

🤔

“Technically, co-sleeping refers to sleeping in close proximity to your child — whether in the same bed or on a separate mattress in the same room,” writes Wendy Syfret. Bed-sharing, a form of co-sleeping, is when you are in the same bed. In practice, the terms are used interchangeably, mostly referring to having your child in the adult bed.

This, of course, goes against what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends. Infants should be placed on their backs, according to the AAP, “for sleep in their own sleep space with no other people.” Some babies may require swaddling, a noise machine, blackout curtains, or a little rocking, but the overall impression is that your child is a simplistic machine — adjust the settings correctly, and they will rest. But at no time should you bring your infant into the bed.

“A long-term devotee to data, I inhaled the warnings before my baby was born and promised to be the kind of parent who was always governed by science and research. But two weeks into the job, I was desperate," continues Syfret.

Happy Fall! 🍁

Breastfeeding Support Group 🤱🏻 meets tomorrow Wed 9/9 at the Park Avenue Community Center from 10-11am.

Instead of our usual room, we will be in the Play Room which is downstairs. ⬇️

The best way to access this room with a stroller is to walk around the building to the back left corner. There are 1-2 steps to navigate if you go around outside. Otherwise, you can leave your stroller upstairs and walk down one flight of steps.

There is a bathroom and changing area adjacent to the Play Room. Text me at 484-212-5979 if you have trouble finding us! I will try to get there early to help you find your way 🧭
