Research examining breastfeeding intentions found the highest risk of postpartum depression among women who intended to breastfeed but did not end up doing so.

• Mothers who planned to breastfeed and successfully breastfed had the lowest depression risk.
• The highest risk of postpartum depression occurred in women who planned to breastfeed but were unable to continue or initiate breastfeeding.

This supports the idea that unmet breastfeeding intentions contribute to emotional distress.
