The Art and Science Behind the Power of Love

People have all kinds of beliefs about unconditional love.

Some people say it is impossible to love someone unconditionally.

Other people say there is no such thing.

And others feel like it makes them a doormat.

Meaning they have to be loving no matter how badly another treats them.

I have news for those of you who think that way.

Absolutely not!

Have you heard this phrase - “Love your neighbor as yourself.”?

Most people have.

But when I ask people what it means they always say….

It means we have to be nice to other people.

And that is what our parents and families teach us...to be nice to others.

But the saying ends with - “...as yourself.”

Our work is about teaching that love is nourishment and how to become self-sufficient with it.

And once you learn to love yourself, you will not allow people to behave unlovingly with you.

Letting people know that something they said or did wasn’t acceptable in a loving way
is the key to unconditional communication. We’ll get there soon.

The Art and Science Behind the Power of Love

Most people want to have more love in their lives.

The obstacle - they don’t know how to get it from others.

And they don’t have permission to get it from themselves,

Or know how to do that.

In our culture loving oneself is not understood or accepted.

We don’t even know we can do it in a mentally healthy way!

It is important to understand that loving yourself is not being egotistical.

No more than eating, or drinking, or breathing. It’s a neccesity.

The 3 behaviors around nourishments are acceptable.

We need those for our wellbeing.

What if love is far more fundamental to human development

And happiness than we thought or have been taught?

Certain behaviors from others make us feel good, feel loved.

We would like those behaviors all the time.

Some behaviors from others make us uncomfortable, sad, angry, unloved.

We try, if possible, to stay away from people who upset us.

The solution is…….

Learn to behave toward ourselves the same way we want people to behave.

Respect, honesty, patience, appreciation, support, empathy, and so forth.

In order to do that…….

We have to learn how to monitor our behavior toward ourselves.

Are we behaving lovingly toward ourselves or behaving unloving?

Are we making loving choices or making bad choices?

Most of us have not mastered that inner journey of awareness .

It is relatively easy, except that it takes time and patience.

There are no miracle pills.

Make a list of others’ behaviors you like.

Make another list of others’ behaviors you don’t like.

Monitor their behaviors and monitor yours.

Now make a list of behaviors/qualities you like about yourself.

Start daily monitoring, and become more and more aware of your own behaviors.

Eventually, you will learn how to train people to be nice to you.

And do it in a nice way. Patiently.

This is the best, if not the only way, to start learning how to love yourself.

The Art and Science Behind the Power of Love

Why do we need love so much?

Without mothers’ love our brains don’t develop fully,

our most important nervous system, the vagal nerves, don’t develop fully,

our bodies don’t generate oxytocin which our immune systems need, etc. etc.

Even though babies are fed in orphanages there were crib deaths.

What do you think was missing - they discovered babies need to be held.

Love was missing! We need love from birth till death.

Science knows that love has nothing to do with attraction.

We tend to be attracted to people with good looks. Like 16 year olds.
But how attractive are people who are dishonest, disrespectful,
impatient, unappreciative?

When someone starts behaving unlovingly, all of a sudden they aren’t attractive anymore.

Attraction excites us, but love brings us inner peace, a feeling of safety, and happiness.

That is what we need to have for our lives to be full of joy.

And we want to be around people who make us feel that way.

The secret to attracting people who make you feel loved
is for you to make people feel loved.

Respected, supported, appreciated, have empathy for, be patient, understanding and so forth..

We do it with best friends!
And for people to feel that way around you, you have to learn to love yourself and others….
Unconditionally.

Don’t get worried…that is a goal..and once you are on that path your life changes.
Everyone can make people feel loved sometimes.

It is called conditional love.

But when you love people even when you are upset with them,
They see you are in control of loving them consistently, they want to be your friend.

As I will explain in a future post, being Unconditional is far from making you into a doormat.

The more love you exhale, give others, the healthier you become.

The Art and Science Behind the Power of Love
Why are people who are seeking love often hopeless?
Every other commercial uses the word love. Songs, movies, books are about falling in love, out of love, being
rejected, broken hearted, or wonderful weddings…and they confuse us completely.
Which is why so many of us feel unloved, and keep searching for love.
Others have accepted that the love they are getting is the best they can do.
None of these have anything to do with love.
You can’t fall in or out of love - it is not jello - it is simply strong physical attraction.
The attraction we feel is part of our animal instinct to procreate.
That is what adrenaline, dopamine, pheromones are for.
Love is what mothers provide, along with their breast milk.
Love is a BIOLOGICAL nourishment. It generates oxytocin, vasopressin, and endorphins.
We know when we need air, food, and water, and we know when we need love.
All the time.
Air, food, and water we can supply to ourselves, we’re self-sufficient, because we’ve been taught.
Love we don’t know how to supply to ourselves, we’re not self-sufficient, because we were never taught.
Parents don’t know it themselves.
Mainly because none of us know that it is essential nourishment.
So we are completely dependent on others for love.
Besides our mothers and fathers, grandparents often do a great job, and any family members or friends that have
that nurturing instinct.
The problem is that we need air, food, and water unconditionally, and we need love exactly the same way.
But after we’re 2, 3, 4 years of age we start getting love conditionally - even from parents. Grandparents tend to be
more consistent.
So, what is the solution?
Well, first of all we need to understand that what we call love is a biological necessity, and therefore we are entitled
to it.
That means we have permission to love ourselves.
We don’t have to wait for others to give us love, although it always feels good to get it from others.
The question I have been answering for almost 40 years is - How does one love oneself?
The answer isn’t a hot bubble bath, with candles, music, and a glass of wine - although that might be nice - it only
lasts an hour or two. Or a pair of shoes, a new car, a vacation, or a great restaurant, these are all poor substitutes.
We need to know what our loveable qualities are. What we genuinely like about ourselves.
