🛡️ Why do some cancer cells manage to hide from the body's immune system?

A new study from Kevin Tharp, Ph.D., and colleagues from Sanford Burnham Prebys shows that conditions often found in tumors, such as high sugar levels and stiffer surrounding tissue, can help cancer cells build a thicker protective coating on their surface. This coating makes it harder for immune cells called natural killer (NK) cells to recognize and destroy them.

Using advanced microscopy and metabolic analysis, the researchers found that a protein called Heat Shock Factor 1 (HSF1) plays a key role in this process. Blocking HSF1 reduced this protective shield and made cancer cells more vulnerable to immune attack.

🧩 These findings highlight a potential new way to boost cancer immunotherapies by making it harder for tumors to hide from the immune system.

This application note shows how 3D Correlative Light-Electron Microscopy (3D CLEM) combines fluorescence and electron microscopy to uncover the molecular mechanisms of mitochondria-ER contact site (MERCS) formation.

🔬 Using the AX with NSPARC Confocal-based Super Resolution Microscope, high-resolution fluorescence imaging was correlated with electron microscopy, revealing the essential role of the PDZD8-FKBP8 complex in MERCS formation.

🔥🌊 Did you know that wildfires don’t just affect land but also impact life beneath the waves? A new study shows that wildfire ash can disrupt the early development of the Mediterranean sea urchin 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘴, causing developmental abnormalities, increased cell death, and stress-related biological responses.

Using the AX-NSPARC confocal microscope, Roberta Miroglio and colleagues from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche – Institute of the Anthropic Impact and Sustainability in the Marine Environment (CNR-IAS), Italy, in close collaboration with the Nikon Imaging Center ( ) at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, visualized changes in key developmental and cellular pathways, helping reveal how ash runoff may threaten coastal marine ecosystems.

🪸 As wildfires become more frequent, understanding their effects on marine biodiversity is increasingly important. Sea urchins may serve as valuable bioindicators of wildfire-related marine pollution.
