Following up with the update we promised as soon as we got answers. Kami has been struggling with shortness of breath, particularly when walking or lying down. Naturally, this gave us a major scare, as lung fluid was the initial sign when her cancer was first discovered - when we only suspected pneumonia.

An X-ray confirmed there was fluid back in her lungs, which she hasn't had since starting treatment. Following a CT scan, the infectious disease team evaluated her for potential infections like PJP or CDV. Thankfully, they believe it isn't an infection, but rather a reaction to radiation that is causing fluid pockets to form. She’s starting a high-dose steroid regimen to take down the inflammation and help her body absorb the fluid.

Thank you for keeping our tough girl in your prayers—she is fighting so hard against this terrible disease that she will overcome! 💕 🎗️

This month shines a light on the children and families facing battles no child should ever have to fight.

As we walk this journey with Kami, we truly believe she was chosen for this battle to show the world that God is still performing miracles today. While we would never have chosen this path, we trust that He has a purpose in it. Kami’s strength, kourage, and unwavering spirit have already touched so many lives, and we know her story will continue to make a difference!

Cancer is a day-by-day journey of unexpected turns—from hard days in hospital rooms to bright days spent soaking up life. We’re cherishing every single blessing and good moment Kami receives. Kami recently squeezed in a quick trip to Michigan and got to spend a wonderful day at the beach in South Haven, which was easily the highlight of her summer! We're praying that next year she’s on her Make-A-Wish trip to Hawaii. 🌴 ☀️

If there’s one thing this path has taught us, it’s just how unpredictable life can be.

Kami had her VLIT treatment last night, which is always the hardest for her. A few hours later, she began having some trouble breathing and they ran a chest X-ray. We are waiting on definitive answers from the scan and will update everyone as soon as we hear more. 🩻

While reading through cardiologist notes in Kami’s MyChart on Friday, I found an image mapping out her chest radiation areas. Sometimes, seeing a visual conveys the sheer intensity of this battle better than words ever could. 🩻

Enter Kami’s sense of humor: looking at the map where it almost makes her look like she's missing her arms, she immediately blurted out, “It looks like I have T-Rex arms!" 🦖

From the day of her diagnosis, we knew our girl was in for the fight of her life. But we also knew how tough she is, and anchored by her faith in God, we trusted the process! 🙏🏻

We are officially over halfway through her primary treatment plan, after which she will start six months of weekly maintenance chemo. The radiation map below illustrates the massive area in her chest that doctors had to attack—and this doesn't even show her lower body. Kami will still need another round of radiation for the tumor in her sacrum. ☢️

We praise God that the cancer in her chest has been completely eradicated. Seeing this image and knowing that entire area is clear is a true miracle. Because the treatment was so close to her heart, her cardiologist is keeping a close eye on her. She is currently wearing a 48-hour heart monitor due to having tachycardia for several months. ♥️

She has fought through hard days that only those who have walked this path could ever truly understand. It has been heartbreaking to watch her endure severe nausea and agonizing pain—knowing the very treatments saving her life are causing her so much discomfort. Despite the bad days she’s endured, she’s an even brighter ray of sunshine as she radiates the true definition of grit and grace! She has shouldered this battle far better than most adults could even attempt, and her kourage is plainly evident. ✨ ☀️

Next week, Kami has to go through another round of VLIT chemo. ☹️ We are praying deeply for her to preserve strength through this, as these VLIT cycles are usually the most brutal of all. We would greatly appreciate prayers for the side effects to be minimal this go around. Also, for the radiation to eliminate the remaining cancer just as it did in her chest! 💕

From September 18–20, CureFest is taking place in Washington, D.C. for all the incredible kids facing cancer. 🎗️

Kami will have a display on the honor wall to represent her fight, and we’re hoping someone attending might be able to send us a photo of it in front of the White House! 💕 🎗️

The purpose of CureFest:

It brings families and advocates directly to the nation's capital to meet with lawmakers and petition for increased government funding and safer, more effective treatments for pediatric cancer. Only 4% of all funding is allocated for childhood cancer. That 4% must be shared across all forms of pediatric cancer combined. The remaining 96% of federal cancer research dollars go toward adult cancers. Through events like rallies, walks, and candlelight vigils in highly visible public spaces around D.C. (such as the National Mall and the White House perimeter), it educates the broader public on the stark disparity in childhood cancer research funding.

Shortly after her diagnosis, Kami was connected with Make-A-Wish prior to her arrival at St. Jude. Kami has chosen to wait until her treatment is fully completed for her big wish to be granted, so Make-A-Wish is brightening her days with monthly deliveries! This package contained an Aloha hat and Kami’s #1 wish was to travel to Hawaii! 🌴 We shall see what her big wish will be! 😊

In addition to the Aloha hat, she received the sweetest item from Make-A-Wish: a cute “Kami’s Fan Mail” pouch holding roughly 60 heartwarming messages from members of the community! I collected ALL of the cards she’s received since her diagnosis and added them to her fan mail pouch! Needless to say, it’s pretty full! Also, she has read each and every card she has received! 💕

Overall, Kami had a great week last week! We were all so relieved and excited when Dr. Pappo announced that she got to take a break from chemo this week.

On Saturday, the needle in her port was changed and started leaking a small amount of blood, so they ran labs the next day. On Sunday, I got a call from the Infusion Center letting us know her labs were concerning and that she needed a blood transfusion. Since she wasn’t showing symptoms, they offered to wait until Monday, but since I had already started driving back home, I contacted Kami and her dad. She was starting to get a mild headache, so they decided it was best to go ahead with the transfusion Sunday evening.

Her numbers took a heavy dip this round: her WBC count hit a new record low of 0.04 (her previous low was 0.08 back on June 29th), and her ANC dropped all the way to 10.

Usually, it takes a couple of days after a transfusion for her body to fully make use of the new blood. Last night, she spiked a fever of 101, so she has been admitted to the hospital and started on antibiotics. Because her ANC is so low, a fever is always treated quickly to prevent any severe infections.

Her boyfriend and other close friends are visiting this week, so we are praying so hard that she turns the corner quickly and gets to enjoy some quality time with them! We're praying the transfusion starts kicking in soon and that the antibiotics bring her fever down fast. 🙏💕
