MediCop MediCop is a comprehensive medical response training course designed for patrol level law enforcement officers.

Question for the medics in the group.

Has needle decompression changed from the 2nd intercostal space mid-clavicular to 4-5th intercostal space mid-axillary?(same place chest tubes are inserted)

We can't teach this skill for officers, but we DO show them and explain what it is so they understand the "why".

Many of you have went through the MediCop program and know how much work went into getting it approved, as well as getting IFAK'S for every officer. In one of the most violent city's in the US, it was imperative that we train our officers better, and this class not only met state standards, but it incorporated stop the Bleed and TCCC standards that have made a difference. Important Update!

The CTCCC updated tourniquet guidelines in May of this year to the following criteria.
(Basically, they went back to a standard we taught many years ago).
1. You can place, or reposition a previously placed tourniquet, 2-3 inches, on bare skin, proximal (above) the wound.
2. Conversion to hemostatic or pressure dressings should only happen if the patient is not in shock, the wound can be closely monitored for rebleeding, and the tourniquet is not managing an amputation.
There is a two hour limit on that rule, which should not impact LE officers, but in the case of a mass casualty incident, it could.
The rule? Any TK that has been in place for longer than 2 hours SHOULD NOT be repositioned or moved by anyone other than licensed medical providers.

Meet the first MediCop patrol med kit. This kit was designed specifically for deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
It came packed with a SOF Tourniquet, an Olaes Trauma bandage, and 2 Hyfin vented chest seals.

The kit was designed to be easily deployed and clipped to your belt, and is designed to augment personal IFAK's.

Desert Storm and The Global War on Terrorism taught us many new concepts when it came to trauma care. Before this, tourniquet usage was not a basic training skill for law enforcement. Having reviewed a large number of applications in the law enforcement field, I have seen many that were not needed. The idea that you automatically apply high and tight without evaluating the wound was meant for active shooting, care under fire situations.
Don't be "that guy" who while handling a scene that is secure, applies a tourniquet without even looking at the wound.
