ACL Surgery in Memphis: Getting Back in the Game with Dr. John Lochemes
A sudden twist. A hard landing. A quick change in direction. For athletes and active adults, an ACL injury can happen in seconds — but the road back doesn’t have to end there.
At Titan Orthopedics in Memphis, Dr. John Lochemes evaluates and treats knee injuries, including ACL tears, with the goal of helping patients regain stability, strength, and confidence.
What Is an ACL Tear?
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the major ligaments that stabilizes the knee. ACL injuries are especially common during sports involving cutting, pivoting, jumping, or sudden stops — including football, basketball, soccer, tennis, and pickleball.
Common symptoms may include:
A popping sensation at the time of injury
Rapid swelling
Knee pain and stiffness
Difficulty bearing weight
A feeling that the knee is unstable or may “give out”
If you experience these symptoms after a knee injury, getting an orthopedic evaluation is important.
Does Every ACL Tear Require Surgery?
No. Treatment depends on several factors, including the severity of the injury, the patient's activity level, age, knee stability, and whether other structures in the knee — such as the meniscus — have also been injured.
Some patients may do well with physical therapy, activity modification, and bracing. For others, particularly athletes and highly active individuals who want to return to cutting and pivoting activities, ACL reconstruction may be recommended.
ACL Surgery and Recovery
ACL reconstruction is designed to restore stability to the knee by reconstructing the damaged ligament with a graft. Recovery doesn't happen overnight. Rehabilitation and physical therapy are essential parts of rebuilding strength, motion, balance, and confidence after surgery.
Every patient's recovery is different, and returning to sports should be based on healing and functional progress rather than simply reaching a certain date on the calendar.
