"I want to talk to someone, but I do not know what actually happens when I call."

We hear that a lot. So here it is, start to finish.

You call (901) 369-1410. A person answers. They ask what is going on, in plain language. There is no form to fill out first.

You get scheduled for an intake. This is not a test and there is no wrong answer. It is a conversation where we learn about you, your history, and what you actually need.

You talk for about an hour. What brought you in. What you have tried. What is working and what is not. You can say "I would rather not answer that" and we move on.

You leave with a plan. Maybe therapy. Maybe seeing a psychiatrist about medication. Maybe both. You are part of deciding, not handed a result.

You come back. Most people meet with the same clinician each time, because it works better when you are not starting over.

We do this across Shelby County, not just at one office. There is likely a location closer to you than you think.

September is National Recovery Month, and we want to start by saying something that costs people years.

You do not have to hit bottom first.

There is a story most of us absorbed somewhere, that treatment is for people who have lost the job, the family, the house. That help is what happens after everything falls apart.

It is not true, and it keeps people waiting.

Most of the people we see are not at the end of anything. They are working. They are parenting. They noticed that the drinking moved from Friday to Tuesday, or that the pills ran out earlier than they used to, and something in them said pay attention.

That is a good day to call. Not the worst day. An ordinary Tuesday when you notice.

Recovery is not a straight line, and it does not have a required starting point.

Both Whitney Avenue clinics, children's and adult, out in the field together. Burgers from Green Beetle Food Truck, shaved ice from Kona Ice, and a whole lot of people who rarely get a lunch break like this one.

Our fiscal year kickoff does not fit in one room, so this year it travels.

We're grateful to the Millington, TN - Municipal Government and Mayor Larry Dagen for proclaiming September 2026 Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

In coordination with the Tennessee Su***de Prevention Network (TSPN), we're working to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind our community that su***de is preventable and treatment works.

Everyone can play a role: learn the warning signs, check in on the people you love, and know where to turn for help.

Alliance has been awarded a $2 million federal grant to strengthen how we care for adults at risk of su***de.

Most people think of su***de prevention as the moment of crisis. The harder part is what happens next. Someone gets care on the worst day of their life, then walks out the door, and the days after are when people fall out of the system quietly.

The research is hard to ignore. 77% of people who died by su***de had seen a health care provider in the year before. 45% within the month before.

The missed appointment is where people are lost.

Over the next five years, this funding will build one clear path for adults at risk. Screening at regular visits. A safety plan made together. A phone call within two days of leaving crisis care, and an appointment within a week. Real handoffs instead of a phone number and good luck.

None of that changes what is available today, and you do not have to wait for it.

I met with the team at Alliance Healthcare Services in Shelby County alongside Shelby County Commissioner-elect Mark Billingsley.

I am grateful to CEO Laurie Powell and Board President Quintin Robinson for the mental and behavioral health services they provide across Shelby County.

This past weekend, our team joined the UTHSC Family Resource Fair at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, hosted by the UT Health Sciences Office of Community Engagement and Wellbeing.

We loved connecting with Memphis families and sharing resources for children, youth, and families!

Our team spent today at the Lakeside conference on Substance Abuse, focused on addiction recovery, connecting with clinicians, counselors, and case managers from across the region.

When calling 911, Memphians will be asked if they need the Police, Fire, EMS, or now a 4th option — mental health. Mayor Paul Young: "For this fourth option, we have one primary mental health partner, which is Alliance."

The city partners with Alliance Healthcare Services and our licensed social workers in crisis response.
