Same muscle, different blueprint 🧬🦷
We talk a lot about the masseter’s 3 layers (superficial, middle, deep) — but here’s what most people don’t know: the way those layers relate to EACH OTHER also varies from person to person. Anatomists classify this into three distinct patterns:
🔹 JUXTAPOSED type (~54%) — the most common pattern
The middle and deep layers sit side-by-side in the same plane, with a clean, clear boundary between them. No overlap.
🔹 OVERLAPPED type (~42%)
The middle and deep layers overlap where they meet, creating a thicker, more blended junction between the two.
🔹 PARALLEL type (~4%) — the rarest pattern
All three layers — superficial, middle, and deep — are clearly stratified, stacked cleanly on top of one another.

Why does this matter for TMJ Botox?
You literally cannot tell which type you’re working with from the outside. That’s exactly why blind, “one-size-fits-all” injection patterns fall short. Knowing how the layers are arranged changes where the needle needs to go, how deep, and how the dose is distributed to calm overactive muscle fibers without under- or over-treating the joint.
Anatomy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your treatment plan shouldn’t be either.
