This month, we honor the children, teens, and adults who have faced cancer with incredible strength and resilience.
Survivorship is more than the end of treatment. It's every birthday celebrated, every milestone reached, every dream pursued, and every moment made possible through advancements in pediatric cancer research. Research continues to improve outcomes for children diagnosed with cancer and helps create brighter futures for survivors and their families.
Today and every day, we celebrate survivors, honor their journeys, and remain hopeful for the children still fighting. 💛

On Brain Tumor Awareness Day, during National Cancer Survivor Month, I'd like to shine a light on our friend Joseph and his family. Both Joseph and his mom are cancer survivors, but their fight is far from over. The California heat has been especially brutal. Ever since his brain tumor removal surgery, Joseph has struggled to regulate his body temperature. Combined with the chronic severe head pain, fatigue, and other challenges he faces daily, the extreme heat makes everything even more difficult.
Today, they were finally able to schedule a neurology appointment in Redwood City on the 15th for an EEG and possible adjustments to his seizure medications. While this is an important step, another urgent challenge remains: keeping the air conditioning running. Their electric bill is currently $428.03 for just one month. Because they were already behind from last month, the total balance has grown to more than $900. Losing air conditioning would be devastating for Joseph's health and comfort. The situation has become even more overwhelming because although Joseph's mom recently had her Social Security benefits reinstated, much of that income has continued to be garnished by the IRS. What little remains is needed for rent and basic necessities. She has even begun pawning family heirlooms to make ends meet.
They are aware of available resources and have utilized many of them already. Their situation is not unique, but it is incredibly difficult. Many childhood cancer organizations helped during the early stages of Joseph's battle. However, now that he is 19 years old, most programs have aged out, with eligibility ending at 18. This family is simply trying to survive while caring for a young man battling aggressive brain cancer. The loss of much needed income has placed an enormous burden on them during an already unimaginable journey.
If you are able to help in any way, it would mean the world.

“ When cancer comes, the goal is to survive it, to beat it, to be NED, to be in remission, to be cured and when it doesn’t end that way, the next goal falls on those left behind to survive the impact still” - Idara Ekanem (Founder and Executive Director, Akanimo Cancer Foundation)
The vision is a world where no child dies of cancer.

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day.

As an organization founded by parents who have walked the childhood cancer journey, this day brings a mix of emotions.

Today, we celebrate the incredible children who have beaten the odds. The children who rang the bell. The children who are years into survivorship. The children who are learning to live beyond cancer while carrying the scars—both visible and invisible—of everything they endured.

We celebrate them. We honor them. We cheer for them.

But today, we also hold space for the families whose children did not survive.

Because in the childhood cancer community, survivorship looks different for every family.

For some, it means celebrating clean scans and milestones. For others, it means carrying the memory of a child who should still be here. It means honoring birthdays in heaven, visiting cemeteries instead of ball fields, and finding ways to keep their child's legacy alive.

To those families, please know that your children are not forgotten today. They are forever a part of this community and forever a part of our hearts.

At Kids Can't Fight Cancer Alone, we have had the privilege of celebrating victories with families, but we have also stood beside families during unimaginable loss. Both journeys matter. Both deserve to be recognized.

Today, we celebrate every survivor. We celebrate every family still fighting. And we remember every child whose fight ended too soon.

Childhood cancer changes a family forever. Whether your child is thriving, currently in treatment, or watching over you from above, you are part of this community, and your story matters.

Today and every day, we stand with you

Today, June 7, we recognize National Cancer Survivors Day. 🩶

For the glioblastoma community, survivorship is not one story, it’s many. It’s strength, resilience, and courage in the face of one of the most aggressive cancers. It’s showing up, every day, in ways big and small.

To those living with GBM, navigating treatment, in remission, or carrying this experience with them, we see you. We honor you.

And to the families, caregivers, and loved ones who stand beside them, your strength matters too.
