After years of planning, fundraising, lobbying, and other preparations, leaders at the Chicago South Side Birth Center are closer than ever to establishing the first independent, Black midwife–led maternity care facility in the city’s majority Black south-side neighborhoods.
In early April, the nonprofit’s leaders were joined by political representatives, community partners, neighbors, birth workers, funders, and other local leaders for a groundbreaking ceremony at 8301 S. South Shore in the city’s South Chicago neighborhood on the far south side.
“What we’re creating here at Chicago South Side Birth Center is truly legacy, not only for ourselves but for our whole community,” said founder and lead steward Jeanine Valrie Logan. “This work we’re doing together involves actualizing the visions and dreams of those who have come before us.”
