When I had my first baby, I went to the hospital believing I had options.

What I quickly learned was that “normal” birth care often means:
speed things up, manage the pain, comply, repeat.

I didn’t want an epidural.
I didn’t want my water broken.
But once interventions started, everything started sn*******ng.

And what stuck with me most wasn’t even the pain. It was the feeling that labor was happening *to* me instead of being supported through with me.

What changed everything for me was realizing there are other ways to cope with labor pain that don’t immediately jump to major interventions.

For a lot of women, simple things like movement, support, water, dim lighting, and feeling safe actually help labor work *better.* Water immersion alone can be incredibly effective for pain management during labor.

That’s why so many women question why birth pools are treated like the “risky” option while much heavier interventions are considered completely routine.

Women deserve real informed consent. Not pressure... not fear... not “this is just how we do things here.”

After years of planning, fundraising, lobbying, and other preparations, leaders at the Chicago South Side Birth Center are closer than ever to establishing the first independent, Black midwife–led maternity care facility in the city’s majority Black south-side neighborhoods.

In early April, the nonprofit’s leaders were joined by political representatives, community partners, neighbors, birth workers, funders, and other local leaders for a groundbreaking ceremony at 8301 S. South Shore in the city’s South Chicago neighborhood on the far south side.

“What we’re creating here at Chicago South Side Birth Center is truly legacy, not only for ourselves but for our whole community,” said founder and lead steward Jeanine Valrie Logan. “This work we’re doing together involves actualizing the visions and dreams of those who have come before us.”
