The Wisdom Behind Some of Bikram Yoga’s Most Misunderstood Traditions 🌺
The 26&2 sequence wasn’t designed to be strict. It was designed to help you succeed.
Every tradition has a purpose — here’s the why behind three of the most common questions we hear from new students:
💧 “Why do we wait to drink water?”
The sequence is designed to build internal heat and rhythm from the very first breath. Coming well-hydrated (water + electrolytes the night before and morning of!) means your body is ready to work. Waiting until after Eagle Pose allows your concentration, breath, and the natural flow of the sequence to stay uninterrupted — so you can get the most out of every posture.
⬆️ “Why do we keep our head above our heart early in class?”
The sequence is intentionally progressive. The early standing postures gradually prepare your cardiovascular system, your nervous system, and your blood pressure for deeper movements. As your body warms up, the sequence naturally introduces postures where the head moves below the heart — bringing fresh oxygenated blood to the brain at exactly the right moment. 🧠
🌡️ “Why does the sequence never change?”
Because your body learns through repetition. The same sequence every time means your nervous system begins to anticipate, adapt, and heal — class after class, year after year.
This practice was designed to work with your body — not against it. Trust the sequence. 🌺
