Since 2012, InterACT NOLA’s mission to create art that challenges perceptions of disability has opened doors for artists with disabilities and audiences eager to experience their work, who might never have seen the arts as an option, but who now see the arts as essential to their humanity. With over 30 artists, InterACT NOLA is multi-cultural, intergenerational, and embraces the entire spectrum of
disability labels. InterACT NOLA’s work is driven by a vision of inclusion. We collaborate with artists with and without disabilities, from mainstream and marginalized communities, whose stories and life experiences are the foundation for our original, ensemble-generated theatrical work. InterACT NOLA is the first performing arts organization for artists with disabilities in Louisiana. InterACT NOLA’s driving vision of inclusion recognizes the fact that people with disabilities are uniquely creative and talented, but are often locked into failure situations because their creativity is ignored, discouraged, or considered inappropriate. InterACT NOLA’s mission challenges that perception. We are leaders in developing an inclusive creative environment, producing work that blurs the boundaries between who “can” and who “cannot”. InterACT spans the spectrum to include artists on the autism spectrum, artists with Down syndrome, and every label in between.
