Diastema refers to a gap or space between the teeth. These spaces can form anywhere in the mouth, but are sometimes noticeable between the two upper front teeth. This condition affects both adults and children.

What are My Treatment Options?
1. Keep the diastema.
2. Orthodontic treatment to move the teeth and close the diastema.
3. Use porcelain veneers, very thin pieces of porcelain bonded to the outside of the teeth.
4. Crown and bridge work or replacement of teeth with implants (adults only).

Gum disease (periodontal) is an infection of the gums that can affect the bone structure that supports your teeth. In severe cases, it can cause your teeth to fall out. Smoking is a major cause of severe gum disease in the United States.

Gum disease begins when the bacteria (microbes) in your teeth get into the gums. If these bacteria remain in your teeth for a long time, layers of bacterial plaque and tartar (hardened bacterial plaque) are formed. This accumulation causes early gum disease, called gingivitis.
