Going into this knee surgery we were prepared for 2 out ones that were entirely dependent on the extent of the damage the surgeon found once he began the operation.
Option 1 was that if the meniscus tear isn’t as large or doesn’t extend as far as we think (based on the MRI) the he will simply debride it and shave off any problematic pieces.
Option 2 is the meniscus tear is extensive and large and debriding it will compromise part of the function of the meniscus so he will instead perform a meniscus repair, where he sutures it together and anchors it to the structures underneath.
Option 1 would be a few weeks to maybe a couple months recovery MAX.
Option 2 is non-weight bearing for 6 weeks and up to 9 months for a full recovery.
Very different outcomes and I wasn’t going to know which path I’d be on until I woke up from surgery…
