Why it works:
Mobilizing the posterior capsule of the hip is powerful.
First, it increases hip Internal rotation, taking pressure off the back. Second, it allows the hip joint to be positioned properly- many people are āhip flexor dominantā meaning they over pull with their hips instead of push with their glutes.
This can lead to all sorts of issues: hip impingement, low back pain, tight hamstrings, SI joint pain, the list goes on and on.
When we mobilize the posterior capsule, we normalize the mechanics of the hip, taking pressure off of the back, giving our muscles the correct tension length relationships for proper mechanics.
Of course mobilization is only the first step, we need to strength too, but if the mechanics are off, the muscles are disadvantaged.
Fix the mechanics!!! Often times the muscles that you think are weak are merely inhibitedā¦this is a HUGE difference from true weakness. More on this later but I see it all the time in the clinic- someone canāt āfireā a muscle, then we mobilize and correct the dysfunction or pain- then they can contract it normally. Donāt waste time with a million stabilizer exercises unless youāre SURE thatās what you need. Examine the mechanics. Strengthen on a good foundation.
