The Florida Stroke Registry was proud to participate in the 29th Annual FTFC Gathering of Eagles, the Fire Chiefs Association of Broward County's premier EMS conference.

Our Stroke Care Workshop, co-presented with Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System, brought stroke specialists and first responders together for hands-on training in stroke recognition and management, NIH Stroke Scale certification, stroke mimics identification, large vessel occlusion screening, and hospital destination decision-making.

When EMS providers are equipped with the right knowledge, outcomes improve. Thank you to every first responder who showed up ready to learn.

A grandmother of four. A sudden blurred vision in her left eye. A stroke.
Barbara Fonner's story is a powerful reminder that stroke can happen to anyone — and that knowing the signs can save your life.

Dr. Gillian Gordon Perue, vascular neurologist and Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology at the University of Miami Health System (UHealth), says the acronym B.E.F.A.S.T. is what everyone needs to know:

Balance loss. Eye symptoms. Face drooping. Arm weakness. Speech difficulty. Time to call 911.

Because Barbara acted fast, she had surgery to open a blocked carotid artery — and got her vision back. Watch her story at the link in bio.

Today is World No To***co Day 🚭 — and we're closing Stroke Awareness Month with a fact that matters:

Smoking doubles your risk of stroke.

The good news: quitting works. Within 2–5 years of quitting, your stroke risk can drop to that of a non-smoker.

It's never too late. Talk to your doctor about cessation support.

Thank you for spending May with us.

This week is the last chance to be part of something bigger.

The son of Dr. Michael Wells, researcher with the Florida Stroke Registry, showing up to the Little Haiti Health Center with a message worth spreading.

We need Creole-speaking adults and community members from all backgrounds to take a short survey on stroke awareness. Scan the QR code, share the flyer, and help make our communities safer.
The survey closes this week. Every response counts.

Post-stroke depression affects up to 1 in 3 survivors — and it's rarely talked about.

Stroke can alter brain chemistry, affect independence, and reshape identity. What follows isn't weakness. It's a real neurological and emotional response.

Recovery includes the mind. Therapy, medication, support groups, and adapted physical activity are all tools available to you.

If you or someone you love is struggling, ask for help. It's part of healing. 💙

A 42% reduction in stroke risk. Just from what's on your plate.
The Mediterranean diet isn't a trend — it's one of the most well-researched dietary patterns for protecting your brain. Olive oil, nuts, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and fish. Simple ingredients with a powerful impact.

You don't need a perfect diet. You need consistent choices. And this one has the science to back it up.

Your brain is shaped, in part, by what you put on your plate.

Blueberries, leafy greens, fatty fish — these aren't superfoods from a trend. They're backed by research showing real impact on stroke risk, blood pressure, and brain cell protection.
And on the other side: ultra-processed foods, excess sodium, sugary drinks, and trans fats quietly working against your arteries every day.

No one's asking for a perfect diet.

Just consistent choices — one at a time.

Small shifts in what you eat can add up to serious protection for your brain over time.

Your next meal is also a brain decision.

Big data is changing how we understand stroke care. Dr. Scott Brown shares how the Florida Stroke Registry uses machine learning to uncover new relationships between clinical and non-clinical variables — and to confirm whether findings from national research actually apply to Florida residents.

Understanding population-level data means more accurate science, and more accurate science means better care for patients.
