If you’ve ever watched a pediatric OT session, you might wonder…

“Are they just playing?”

Sometimes, it definitely looks that way!

But the activities we choose, how we change them, when we step in, and when we let a child figure something out are intentional. Two children might even be doing the exact same activity for completely different reasons.

That’s one of the best things about pediatric OT — meeting children where they are and building skills through something that comes naturally to them:

Getting dressed is something we do every day — which means it can tell us a lot.

For an OT, the goal isn’t simply whether a child can get their clothes on. We’re looking at how they do it, where they get stuck, what they avoid, and what kind of support makes a difference.

Those everyday moments can give us some of the best information about the skills a child is developing.

Some kids seem to have two speeds: GO…and GO FASTER. 😅

All that jumping, crashing, climbing, spinning, and rough-and-tumble play can actually give us useful information about what a child’s body is looking for.

The goal isn’t necessarily less movement — sometimes it’s finding safe, purposeful ways to give their body the movement and input they’re seeking.

And sensory needs aren’t one-size-fits-all. What helps one child feel calm and organized might be completely different for another.

Pediatric Occupational Therapy is about so much more than handwriting and fine motor skills.

Sometimes the things we notice in everyday life — getting dressed, big reactions, constantly needing to move, difficulty with play or struggling with daily routines — are clues that a child may need a little extra support.

OT can help identify what may be getting in the way and build the skills children need to participate more successfully in everyday life.

Through play, movement, sensory experiences, music, and connection, children have opportunities to explore and grow—while caregivers gain simple ideas they can carry into everyday life.

Winding Willows is hiring a pediatric occupational therapist in the Dayton, Ohio area.

We already have families waiting for services, creating the opportunity to begin part-time or build a full schedule. We prioritize flexible scheduling, meaningful care, and sustainable caseloads rather than applying the same blanket productivity quota to every therapist.

I loved spending the morning with The Gathering today!

It was so nice getting to meet so many moms and littles, share a little about The Nest, and just have time to connect.

Thank you to The Gathering for inviting Winding Willows to be part of the walk. Creating opportunities for families to find community and grow together is such a big part of why I started The Nest.
