Watching my little apiary bounce back after a hard winter has been nothing short of inspiring. Nature tells a beautiful story of resilience and strength, all wrapped in a little bit of chaos. This winter we lost about 50% of our hives, but now we’re back up to 11 thriving hives in the apiary, with a nuc arriving soon. We purchased bees for the first time in a few seasons because we couldn’t predict what spring would bring and I couldn’t imagine bee-ing without my bees!

Three hives already have honey supers on top, which can only mean one thing… HONEY PRODUCTION IS UNDERWAY 🍯🐝🍯

What are the busy bees up to? See below!

🐝🌷Foraging bees are out collecting pollen from trees and other blooms.

🐝👑The queen is inside laying eggs - up until recently, she has only been laying female, future worker bees. As it becomes closer to swarm season, the queen will lay drones (male bees). While the drones do not have a job inside of the hive, their job is to leave the hive and search for a virgin queen to mate with.
When we have drones present, the hives can prepare to swarm by making a new queen. We can now see that the queen has begun to lay drone eggs as this capped brood/ larvae has a bulbous appearance versus the female worker brood which is flush. It is not quite swarm season yet but the hives are gearing up.

Did a little spring cleaning and peaked in to make sure everyone had food before the impending snow. Fingers crossed these 6 hives stay strong 💪 🐝🌨️

Happy to see some sunshine and BEES!
sad to say that we are now at 5 hives and I suspect that last cold week was what got them however, the five remaining hives are looking really good.

What does the nervous beekeeper do after a major winter storm? She goes out and listens for the therapeutic buzz of a living hive. So far, I am confident 9/10 hives are alive. A small swarm that was caught in August who was weaker going into winter was quiet which is not too much of a surprise. Stay warm ladies, 7 weeks until spring ❄️🐝🌸
