“Before finding Al-Anon Family Groups, I tried to control other people, to please everyone, and left myself in the dust every time. Now, I am learning how to take care of myself, love myself, and find myself worthy instead of trying to get validation from others. I've been able to love others and detach in a loving way. I'm so grateful for Al-Anon!”

“There are no ‘musts’ in Al-Anon Family Groups. This small sentence made it easier for me to keep coming back. I could choose to share or to just listen. But what helps me most is not taking someone else's alcoholism personally and understanding that I can give myself what alcoholism could not – self-acceptance.”

Tradition Twelve: Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles above personalities.

Anonymity is a core principle of Al‑Anon Family Groups, shaping how members participate and how the program is understood by those inside and outside the fellowship. At its heart, anonymity creates a safe, equal space where personal healing and recovery from the family disease of alcoholism stays front and center. According to the “Al‑Anon/Alateen Service Manual” (P-24/27), it “is a sacred trust, basic to our fellowship and its survival.”

For newcomers, anonymity lowers the barrier to entry. Many new to the program are often afraid, ashamed, and uncomfortable sharing personal family struggles related to alcoholism. Knowing their names, stories, and attendance will be respected as confidential allows newcomers to listen honestly, speak openly, and take their first steps toward recovery without fear of judgment or exposure.

For longtime members, it reminds us to place principles above personalities, keeping humility and equality at the heart of the program. By keeping names and identities out of the spotlight, we can ensure the focus stays on recovery, understanding, and hope.
