from the late great Louis Gifford.

wVery similar to the famous Hilppocrates quote: “it’s more incorrect to know what sort of person has a disease than what sort of disease a person has.”

Of course this is not universally true, but in many msk issues, when the diagnosis doesn’t strongly affect treatment, it does.

Did you know that what we eat can have an effect on chronic pain? Inflammation, especially systemic inflammation, plays a significant role in many conditions such as arthritis, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and many others. What and how we eat can either help increase our inflammatory load or help reduce it (along with exercise).

As the saying goes, you are what you eat. So choose wisely

As health care providers, we spend a lot of time taking care of others. But we also need to make taking care of ourselves a priority. This means both our mental/emotional and physical health.

For certain types of people, it may be hard to put yourself first because it may appear selfish. It isn’t. The better state you are in, the better you will be at taking care of others. 👊

My apologies for the 90’s hip-hop reference, but if you aren’t familiar with NNT (number needed to treat), hopefully this will help.

NNT is a statistical measure sometimes seen (but not often enough, IMO) in research papers that essentially outlines the number of patients needed to be treated for ONE person to achieve a desired outcome.

Let’s be honest, everyone doesn’t have a positive outcome with every intervention. This includes medications, surgery, injections, and yes, even physio 😕. In research, however, they are usually only looking at one specific intervention or comparing a couple different ones. In clinical practice, we have many options that we can take advantage of.

While physio is conventionally considered to primarily consist of exercise and manual therapy and some modalities, education is one of our biggest assets as well as other lifestyle interventions including sleep and stress management, along with nutritional advice. Furthermore, EMPATHY has been shown to have a large effect on a positive patient outcome!

Exercise always better than being sedentary!
Some is good, a little more is often better. Find something you enjoy, will do consistently, and preferably involves a combination of strength and cardiovascular fitness

Exercise can be medicine, but perhaps we should treat it more like food.

Does it really take only 21 days to form a new habit? Probably not.

Research shows the average may be closer to 66 days with a range between 18-254 days based on the complexity of the habit and multiple individual factors!

While the best time to start making some positive lifestyle changes is now, don’t be discouraged if it takes longer than expected to see significant improvement. Staying intentional and consistent will go a long ways towards seeing progress.

Focusing on the PROCESS and not the outcome itself is also a better way to actually be successful!
