Our Trustee and Medical Advisor, Prof Alison Birtle, as well as Chief Executive Lydia Makaroff, were at the launch of the new Urology Department at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Ms Sarah Hart, the specialist urology doctor who led the planning, shared, “Early diagnosis makes successful treatment more likely, and this is a great opportunity to learn about what to look out for and when to seek medical help.”

We are optimistic that this signifies a brighter chapter for Lancaster Urology, promising better outcomes for all patients.

“The diagnosis hit me like a train; I simply couldn’t understand or take in what I was being told.”

Mother-of-two Carlie was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2021. She’d discovered blood in her wee almost a year previously but delays due to COVID-19 meant there was a long waiting list for urology appointments.

“In April things got really bad, and I was crying on the phone to the GP practice when I told the receptionist that the blood was very visible”

Doctors were initially puzzled, due to her overall good health and relatively young age. But Carlie knew something wasn’t right.

“In July I had a call from the hospital asking me to come for a cystoscopy in four days’ time, and I had to go on my own, because of COVID-19 restrictions. So I was alone when the urologist put in the camera, saw a tumour and told me there and then that it was cancer.”

Carlie’s surgery was successful, and while there is a high chance of recurrence, she made a full physical recovery and returned to work just three weeks after her operation.

May is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re here for everyone’s who’s affected. We Stand Up To Cancer with Carlie.
