POV: you’re at the first ever Free Midwifery Care day at as a Traditional Birth Attendant (or Birth Assistant) & you’re surprised with full student apprenticeship that you’re required to secure in order to become a licensed Midwife. And it is a FINANCIALLY FUNDED apprenticeship (which is rare in the student midwifery journey). 🥹😭
For those that don’t know being a student midwife, especially Black, is tough. The biggest barriers to this learning journey is being able to pay our bills while being on call for births 24/7, staying grounded in didactic training, & showing up for our birthing community in other ways. Not to mention the hazing & racism most have to endure to cross the finish line.
I feel the UTMOST gratitude for for being open & generous enough to develop the Traditional Midwifery Freedom Path! This program affirms us as learning Midwives, highlights the importance of REST in this work & not pouring from an empty cup, & teaches us to trust our intuition in the ways of our ancestors while also giving us the clinical skills we need to provide safe/ethical care.
Thank you to and for guiding our learning, I’m so excited to receive your wisdom.
