Meet August’s Cool Dad Mike Hollings. Mike, a transplant from the UK, is an engineer of sorts and works in battery sales. He is a Ta**us (one of our favorite signs) and he says that his favorite food is steak. He and his spouse, Dr. Kelin Prokurat, have two adorable daughters that love coming to the Y. For Mike, racing sailboats and playing rugby are a bit of a thing of the past. These days he is happy to float in a lake in the warm months and ski with his girls in the winter. He says that they first came to the Y because it was convenient for them and he wanted his kids to learn to swim, but they ended up finding more than they anticipated at Carls.
“ What keeps us there is the community, the friendship, the unwavering support, the smiles, Summer Camp, Parents [Evening] Out and an environment where the whole family feels safe, welcomed and known.”
To Mike, being a dad and being an active participant in his community are very much enmeshed. Both come with responsibility, a lot of “to-ing and fro-ing,” and both come with much joy and reward. He seems to mean that a big part of being a dad for him is about action.
“It means supporting my partner and other dads (and Mom’s :-)) when they are struggling and when they are not. And it means watching two little girls grow and thrive in the best environment I can provide for them.” Community is important to Mike. He says he wants to see “people coming together to support one another” in an environment where everyone is welcome. Mike and his family have definitely been an invaluable part of our community and we are proud to name him as August’s Cool Dad of Carls! Carls Family YMCA The Y
