Just a little reminder that mindfulness is about being present, in the moment. We cannot feel things like eutierria when we are stuck in the past or worried about the future. We must be present in the 'here and now'.

Any moment we spend outside in the natural world is a homecoming. We belong in Nature, existing within it, not aside or apart from it. Our mental and physical health requires time to balance in the living world - it's a scientifically proven fact!

Stewardship is the one role that humankind was born to play - and yet, it's the one role we have been conditioned to ignore. We have been taught that amassing hoards of material wealth is more important than living with and protecting the natural world. It is never too late to step into the role meant for us. Small positive actions as stewards now are better than no actions ever.

I can't help but visualize this 'garment of destiny'; it looks moth-eaten and frayed. Each animal we have driven to extinction, each plant, and as we scar the very bedrock looking for more riches...it has to have unraveled some Integral part of the fabric. The fact that future generations will never be able to visualize this garment whole and in all its splendor is sadly sobering.

When I've shared this quote before, people ask how they'll know that the earth loves them. And I tell them it has never not loved them, even if they forgot to love Nature. The trees continue to give us oxygen and fruits, the sun warms us, the breeze cools us, and we eat and drink its bounty. And it never asks for anything in return...not that it doesn't need our love and care and stewardship, but it won't ever ask for it.

Someone recently said to me: "What's all this about slowing down in Nature? I only have an hour - if that - and what can I do in an hour if I slow down?" Short answer: A LOT! It's important to remember that it isn't a race. There is no destination, just the journey. If we slow down in Nature and observe with our senses, we learn more about the living world around us than when we are rushing through it. Take a moment to sit and listen, feel the breeze, smell the earth, watch everything that moves, and taste the air - and suddenly you realize what you miss when you're in a hurry, and you feel that much more connected to the world around you!

When I was much younger, it felt like quotes like this were used to scare us into action - a threat against our children. Now, years later, and I feel like it's just the reality of the situation. We talk about our children as treasures, the future of our species, and yet we fail to educate them, protect them, or even allow them to inherit an inhabitable planet. It's not a scare tactic, we simply didn't take it seriously enough.
