In Traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians are pathways through which your body’s vital energy, or qi flows. Think of them as an energetic superhighway delivering energy, blood, and fluids throughout the body to support your organs, muscles, and tissues. When this flow is smooth, the body can maintain balance and wellness. When it becomes blocked, discomfort, pain, or imbalance may arise.
Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points along these meridians with ultra-fine needles, helping to restore the free flow of qi and activate the body’s natural healing abilities.
The meridian system includes 12 primary pathways connected to the organ systems, along with vessels that help regulate and connect the body’s energy.
While modern science has not confirmed meridians as physical structures per se, many acupuncture points and meridian pathways closely align with fascial planes and nerve networks observed in the body as recently reported in a New York Times article about the interstitum.
