During her commencement address on Saturday, Dr. Bisola Ojikutu touched on what makes Labouré special:

"Luckily, I had the chance to speak with several students before addressing you today. They each had unique experiences at Labouré—different ages, different countries of birth, different family responsibilities, different paths to nursing.

But one theme ran through every story: belonging.

I have multiple degrees. I have attended some of the most prestigious universities in this country. And I do not ever recall feeling that kind of belonging. Most people do not. What you have had here is rare."

Our Alumni bring this sense of community to their healthcare professions - where the legacy of Labouré will continue to live on well after its closure. 💙

Congratulations to the Class of 2026, the last graduating class of Labouré College of Healthcare. You carry with you not just your degrees, but the legacy of every student and educator who came before you. It's the end of an era.

From Florence Nightingale to today’s dedicated Labouré female alumni who continue to lead the way in transforming patient care and shaping the future of nursing!

Labouré College of Healthcare has reached an agreement to transition its nursing programs to Curry College and establish the Labouré Center for Advancing Healthcare Opportunity. Pending regulatory approvals, these programs will be part of Curry’s School of Nursing and Health Science beginning in the Fall Semester. Labouré will cease all academic operations as of August 31, 2026.

We know how hard this is to hear, and we share your sadness. 💙

This week we're highlighting Susie King Taylor (1848-1912) who is credited as the first Black army nurse and the first Black woman to self-publish her memoir!

Despite strict laws about formal education for enslaved people, Susie secretly attended school known as "underground education." She later joined the civil war efforts serving in Beaumont, South Carolina where she worked alongside Clara Barton. She went on to write about her experiences in "Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33d United States Colored Troops, Late 1st S.C. Volunteers." In 1902, she published this memoir becoming the first and only Black woman to publish an account of her experiences during the Civil War.

Fun fact: Susie spent the last half of her life calling Boston home! 💙

2026 marks the historic 100 year milestone of national efforts to commemorate the history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans. We will use this month to honor the Black nurses and healthcare professionals that have shaped the vocation!

Today we are remembering local hero Mary Eliza Mahoney (1845-1926). Born in Dorchester, Mahoney fought to graduate from one of the country's first nursing programs in 1879, ultimately becoming the first Black professional nurse in the US. She went on to help found the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN) in response to the discrimination she and her colleagues faced in their field.

In recognizing Mary, we also recognize the many Black American nurses who came before her but were not allowed the opportunity to be professionally trained. Their legacy lives on today. 💙
