You’re not supposed to bounce back. I joined Laurie Groh and Katie Fortune on Without the Couch to talk about my birth story, matrescence, birth trauma, and what actually helps in those first postpartum months — including postpartum hormones and how to speak up for yourself in a birth room when everything is moving fast. Link in bio.

Postpartum cortisol regulation when you’re a mom of twins… aka trying to convince your nervous system that everything is fine while two babies are crying. 😂

Let’s be real, the goal isn’t an stress-free postpartum. It’s building a body that can better respond to and recover from stress. 🤍

After completing my pregnancy glucose test, I thought I may have failed it by trying to optimize my glucose response🤦🏼‍♀️

Take my pregnancy glucose test with me!

Here’s what happened…
I was told I could eat before my test, including eggs, so I decided to have a zero-carb protein shake about an hour beforehand. And then I started second-guessing myself…

Did I just mess up my glucose test? 👀
Thankfully, no. Eating breakfast 2–3 hours beforehand was actually part of the instructions I was given. I was told I could eat a breakfast like eggs, with protein and minimal carbohydrates, before coming in for the test.

And this is an important distinction:
This is a standardized glucose screening test — not a test of how your blood sugar responds to your typical meal.

You receive the same 50g glucose load, followed by a standardized blood glucose measurement.

What would be more likely to interfere with the intended glucose challenge is consuming protein or food with or immediately before the glucose drink, because nutrients can influence gastric emptying and the glucose response. This is a standardized test, not a functional lab.

So apparently… I didn’t need to panic. 😂

But this experience made me think about something I talk about with my patients all the time:
Your metabolic health during pregnancy doesn’t start with the glucose drink.
Preparing for pregnancy — ideally months to years before conception — gives you an opportunity to work on the things you can control.

Things I focus on include:
✨ Building and maintaining muscle mass prior to and during pregnancy
✨ Staying active throughout pregnancy
✨ Eating high protein + high fiber diet
✨ Eating breakfast - Hello to my morning smoothie
✨ Assessing metabolic health before and early in pregnancy

For my own patients, I often want to understand metabolic health early in pregnancy — including markers such as fasting glucose, insulin and HbA1c, with additional testing based on individual risk factors. So I can understand how their blood sugar responds functionally.

Almost a year into motherhood, and already finding songs that somehow put words to it. 💙💙

➡️Postpartum really is the fourth trimester of pregnancy.

Motherhood crashes into you. It transforms you, stretches you, and somehow turns you into someone you never knew you could become.

Looking back on almost a year of this journey feels so emotional — filled with laughter, love, fatigue & breastmilk haha. 😂

And this month, I got to watch my baby sister become a mom, too. 🥹💙

A little July dump of summer, motherhood & all the magic in between. ✨

I get this request allll the time. How do I balance my hormones? And they are on a hormonal birth control. I hope this helps educate you on your choice of birth control and perhaps help you understand why your OB/GYN can only offer a different birth control method to help you. If you want to really get back to cycling and being in sync with your cycle then it might be time to change your birth control method. Before you go off of the pill- especially if planning for pregnancy- let’s chat about steps you can take to support your body as you transition through this process!

We started foods…! Transitions are hard, especially with twins. Today I meal prepped these foods for my boys and me! 🤍

Today the boys tried sweet potato, broccoli, and avocado—three nutrient-dense foods that support growth, brain development, and healthy eating habits from the start.

Baby-led weaning is about exploration, exposure, and helping little ones build confidence around food. Baby’s main nutrients are still coming from breastmilk.

And yes, most of it ended up everywhere except their mouths. 😅
