It is National CNA Week, and we are taking a moment to honor the absolute heartbeat of our clinical team: our Certified Nursing Assistants. 💙

In hospice care, our CNAs step into some of life’s most vulnerable moments. They handle the deeply personal tasks of bathing, dressing, and hygiene—and they do it with a level of grace and respect that immediately puts our patients at ease. They don’t just provide physical care; they restore a profound sense of dignity.

Our goodie baskets are just a small token of how deeply we appreciate our bath aids!

To the Caring Hearts Hospice aides who bring warm towels, gentle conversation, and beautiful smiles into homes across Oregon: We see the heavy lifting you do, both physically and emotionally. You are truly angels on earth. Thank you!

“How do we afford all the medical equipment?”

When families transition to hospice, they are often overwhelmed by the thought of needing to purchase a hospital bed, a wheelchair, or oxygen tanks. The reassuring truth is: You don't have to.

Under the Medicare Hospice Benefit, all necessary medical equipment and supplies related to your loved one’s primary diagnosis are delivered directly to your home and are 100% covered. Caring Hearts Hospice coordinates the delivery and setup of everything from specialized beds and shower chairs to oxygen and incontinence supplies. We transform your home into a safe, fully equipped sanctuary so you can focus entirely on comfort.

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. 💜

When a loved one reaches the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s or dementia, traditional communication often fades. For family caregivers, this can be an incredibly isolating and heartbreaking season.

At Caring Hearts Hospice, our care team is specially trained to connect with dementia patients where they are. When words fail, we focus on the senses: the soothing touch of a hand massage, playing their favorite music from their youth, or ensuring their environment is calm and familiar. You do not have to navigate the final chapters of dementia alone.

Caregiver burnout is real, it is heavy, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. 🤍

If you are caring for a loved one on hospice and feel completely depleted, you might be eligible for Respite Care. Under the Medicare Hospice Benefit, patients can be temporarily transferred to a contracted inpatient facility for up to five days.

This isn't because the patient’s condition has worsened—it is entirely to give the family caregiver a chance to sleep, rest, and recover. If you are running on empty, let our Caring Hearts team coordinate a respite stay. You deserve to recharge.

Welcome to our first Monday Matters post, where we break down the most common questions about end-of-life care to give your family peace of mind. Today, we are tackling a big one: What is the difference between palliative care and hospice care? 🩺

While both focus intensely on comfort and pain relief, the main difference comes down to timing and treatment goals:

Palliative Care can begin at the moment of a serious diagnosis. A patient can continue to receive curative treatments (like chemotherapy or surgery) while also getting expert symptom management.

Hospice Care begins when curative treatments are no longer working, or when a patient chooses to stop them to focus entirely on quality of life.

Think of hospice as a specialized type of palliative care designed for the final season of life. Both are about living as comfortably as possible, but hospice steps in when the focus shifts completely from a cure to comfort.

With June arriving, summer travel is officially beginning. For many out-of-town families, this means planning a trip to Oregon to visit a loved one who is in hospice care. ✈️🌲

Visiting a family member at the end of life can feel daunting. Here is our best piece of advice: Focus on connection, not conversation.

A patient's energy levels fluctuate rapidly. If they are sleeping or too tired to talk, simply holding their hand, reading a book aloud, or sitting quietly in the room together is incredibly meaningful. Your presence is the present.

If you are traveling to visit a patient in our care this summer, our Caring Hearts team is here to help you understand what to expect so you can make the most of your precious time together.

June is Men’s Health Month, and we want to take a moment to speak directly to the husbands, partners, and sons who are acting as primary caregivers. 🤝

Statistically, male caregivers are significantly less likely to ask for help, seek out support groups, or admit when they are physically and emotionally burnt out. They often try to shoulder the entire burden silently.

To the men in our Oregon community who are quietly moving mountains to care for a declining loved one: Your health matters, too. Asking for hospice support is not a sign that you are failing your family; it is the smartest, strongest way to ensure they get the expert care they need. Let us share the heavy lifting.

“Why won’t they eat? Are they starving?”

This is one of the most common, heartbreaking questions we hear from families. Food is our universal love language. When a loved one stops eating, it feels incredibly scary and unnatural to a caregiver.

We want to offer you some peace of mind: They are not starving. 🤍

As the body enters its final season, it naturally begins to power down. The digestive system slows, and the body no longer requires or desires the energy from food. Forcing food can actually cause extreme discomfort. At Caring Hearts Hospice, we guide families through these natural transitions, offering new ways to show love—like a gentle massage, a cool swab for dry lips, or simply holding a hand.

"What do I say?"

It is the most common question we hear from families navigating the end-of-life journey. There is an immense pressure to find the perfect, profound words to comfort someone facing a terminal illness.

We want to offer you a gentle reassurance: You don't need to have the right words. Sometimes, the most powerful form of care is simply your quiet presence. Sitting together, holding a hand, or sharing a comfortable silence is a beautiful way to say, “I am here, and you are not alone.”

At Caring Hearts Hospice, we are here to support you through those quiet moments.

We want to share a vital reminder with every family caregiver in Oregon: Asking for help is a sign of profound love, not a sign of failure. ✨

Many families wait to call Caring Hearts Hospice because they feel they should be able to manage everything on their own. But caregiving for a seriously ill loved one is a 24/7, physically exhausting, emotionally overwhelming job. It takes a village.

When you invite our team into your home, you aren't stepping away from your loved one. You are bringing in expert reinforcements so you can step back from being a stressed caregiver, and simply go back to being a loving daughter, son, or spouse.

Let us help you carry the load.
