Turns out 17th June is Red Apple Day in Australia! 🇦🇺 It's not until 1st December in the USA 🇺🇸, BUT given my roots, I think we can extend the celebration!! Because here at Vida Naturopathics we love the humble apple (red & green for that matter) and all her therapeutic properties... Y'all - food is medicine. 🖖
Dear Heritage Apples, how I love thee... Let me count the ways:
🍎 Gut health (prebiotic fiber): Apples provide soluble fiber (especially pectin) that feeds beneficial gut microbes and supports production of short-chain fatty acids that help maintain a healthy gut lining and bowel function.
🍎 Bowel regularity: The mix of soluble + insoluble fiber can help normalize stool consistency and support regular elimination (helpful for both constipation-prone and “looser stool” patterns).
🍎 Cardiometabolic support: Regular apple intake is associated in studies with modest improvements in LDL cholesterol and overall heart health, largely due to fiber and polyphenols.
🍎 Blood sugar steadiness: The fiber matrix in apples can slow glucose absorption, helping reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes (especially when eaten with a protein-containing meal).
🍎 Polyphenols (antioxidant/anti-inflammatory support): Apples contain polyphenols (including quercetin, catechins, chlorogenic acid) that have antioxidant activity and may support healthy inflammatory signaling.
🍎 Vascular/endothelial support: Apple polyphenols may support blood vessel function (endothelial function) and circulation; one mechanism behind cardiometabolic benefits seen in dietary pattern research.
🍎 Satiety/weight support: Apples are low energy density and high in water + fiber, which can increase fullness and help reduce overall calorie intake in some people.
🍎 Colon health: Higher fruit and fiber intake patterns (including apples) are associated with lower colorectal cancer risk in population studies; fiber’s effects on microbiome, stool bulk, and transit time are plausible contributors.
🍎 Bonus points for stewed apples/applesauce: Warm, cooked apples are often easier to tolerate and deliver pectin in a form that’s especially supportive for the gut; helping with stool consistency and gut lining support for many people. Add in 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, for additional blood-sugar balancing properties!

Bowel cancer is one of the biggest health concerns in our society, and lifestyle choices are closely linked to the risk of developing it.
Apples have been shown in studies to support gut health and overall wellbeing. The simple habit of enjoying an apple a day can be a small but meaningful choice for your health.
It really is true that an apple a day may help keep the doctor away.
Little changes can make a big difference. 💚
