Minnesota Association of Veterinary Technicians

Minnesota Association of Veterinary Technicians Networking and continuing education information site for Veterinary Technicians in Minnesota.

Veterinary technicians have come a long way, from our early beginnings when we were known only as animal health technicians and had only a handful of schools with training programs to now close to 150 accredited school programs in the United States. Technicians work in a variety of settings such as large and small animal private veterinary practices, research facilities, university hospitals, and

zoos. We can perform most duties related to animal care, including anesthesia, medical imaging, lab work, dentistry, surgical assisting, patient treatments, as well as client education; however we may not diagnose conditions, give a prognosis for conditions, perform surgery or prescribe medication. If you have an interest in the field of veterinary technology or a question about our association, please browse through our website or contact us directly.

Join our September Tech Tuesday Talk: Animal Cruelty Examination and Documentation

Animal cruelty is often linked to other forms of violence, making thorough investigations critical to both animal and public safety. This presentation explores how Credentialed Veterinary Technicians (CVTs) can support cruelty investigations through forensic examination, documentation, photography, and evidence collection—helping build stronger, defensible cases for prosecution.

We are excited to have Travis Bruns, CVT, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) presented at this Tech Talk Tuesday!

Do you feel comfortable caring for a patient with a tracheostomy tube? For the majority of us, patients with tracheostomies are a rare occurrence. You may find the thought of taking care of such a patient intimidating. In this course, we’ll describe how a tracheostomy tube is placed and what the technical staff can do to help. We’ll then go into detail about patient care, tube management, and potential complications.

Over the last several months, MAVT has been working hard on updating our bylaws, policies, and mission to better reflect the current times and position our organization for the future.

MAVT members should have received an email today with a copy of our proposed amended bylaws. The bylaws will be open for a 30-day review period, after which we will begin the voting process.

We encourage all members to take the time to review the proposed changes and share any questions, comments, or concerns with us at [email protected].

Thank you for being part of MAVT and for helping us build a strong foundation for the future!

Important information to know!

With the Board now overseeing veterinary technician titling in Minnesota, LVT continuing education requirements have been updated to support consistency and professional development across the field.

LVTs must complete 16 hours of CE every two years to renew their license. CE can be earned through any combination of live or recorded learning - whatever best fits your schedule.

A quick reminder:
No more than 4 of your 16 hours may be in non‑medical subjects. The remaining hours should focus on medical CE that supports your veterinary skills and ongoing professional growth.

Flexible formats, clear expectations - all designed to help you stay current in your practice.

Making Mom's with Modern Anesthetic Plans and Neonatal Resuscitation

Ask yourself, am I using modern best practices when anesthetizing a canine patient for C-section or am I selecting a plan on my training. In this webinar, we will navigate creating a modernized anesthetic plan with pre-emptive analgesia based on a literature-based review. We will explore modern anesthetic plans proven for C-section that optimize both the mother and newborns outcome. Finally, we introduce emerging neonatal resuscitation recommendations. Anesthesia is a process for all patients—from presentation through recovery which includes a return to normalcy. For C-sections, that includes fostering the mother-newborn bond with outstanding nursing care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Broaden understanding of the impact of advanced stage pregnancy on drug pharmacology and physiology as it related to anesthesia.
Learn to confidently create a balanced anesthetic plan with appropriate analgesia for patients requiring C-section with drugs supported by peer-reviewed, literature.
Understand local-regional techniques and how to perform them for patients requiring C-section.
Gain confidence in the most up-to-date resuscitation guidelines for newborns delivered by C-section.
Gain confidence with nursing care methods of supporting the maternal-newborn bond in the recovery period.
