Quick one. A client gives you two things: a reason they can't, and a reason they want to. Only repeat the want. Every time. "You want to keep up with your grandkids." Not "I know work's brutal." The reason they want it is the reason they show up Monday.

Personal trainers, you're hearing the wrong half of this sentence. A client says, "I'd love to keep up with my grandkids… but work has me completely burned out." Most trainers grab "burned out" and start fixing it. Wrong half. The half that matters is "keep up with my grandkids." That's the reason they'll actually show up. So say it back to them, out loud: "Keeping up with your grandkids, that's what this is really about." The excuse fades. The reason gets louder. That's the whole game.
