Instead of lying, I like to reframe it.

If they have forgotten that their spouse has died, they have a terminal diagnosis, or they no longer work at a job they loved, reminding them may unneccessarily create shock, grief and distress.

As long as we are trying to reduce distress or preserve dignity, being creative with the truth is all part of meeting them where they are.

Here are a few basic tips to facilitate more positive interactions:

1. Approach your person from the front so they are not startled to see or hear you.
2. Position yourself at their level to avoid towering over them
3. Smile to convey that you are happy to see them (fake it till you make it if needed).
4. Use a calm, pleasant tone (I call this my kindergarten teacher voice).
5. Match their mood to validate their feelings (if they are sad, don’t bounce in like a cheerleader for example).

Refining our presence is the first step to approaching a potentially challenging situation.

Even when they lack a full understanding of the situation and their perception doesn’t align with reality, your person’s emotions and feelings are totally valid. When we step into their reality, try to understand what's happening from their point of view, and accept it as real for them, we have chosen the road of validation rather than confrontation. One way to validate feelings and emotions is to simply acknowledge them:

“It sounds like you’re missing your hometown. Tell me about it.”

“That TV remote looks complicated. Let’s figure it out together.”

“The hallway seems busy right now. I’ll walk with you to dinner.”
