This calf (gastrocnemius & soleus) and achilles stretch works through multiple angles using a yoga strap or towel so you can reach the gastrocnemius, the soleus, and the achilles rather than stretching the same spot every time. The video also includes a kneeling toe curl and hover for a deeper achilles and foot stretch.

How long should you hold a stretch? The answer is, it depends:)

This is not just another traditional Cat /Cow; there's a thoracic twist, a reach, and Thread the Needle to finish. Together, they move the spine through flexion, extension, and rotation. Full video on YouTube at 9am this morning.

Do not forget to breathe. It sounds obvious, but many people hold their breath somewhere in a stretch without realizing it. Don’t let that be you. Exhale toward the end of the movement. Inhale as you transition between positions. Breathing with the stretch rather than through it changes how much the spine actually lets go.

Do you have pain or tension in your neck and upper back? Or are you developing a small hump at the base of the neck? Both of these scenarios can come about when the muscles responsible for holding you upright are weak from years of many hours a day looking forward and down.

This prone upper body exercise strengthens the erectors, or paraspinals, the muscles along the back side of the spine, that keep you upright and extend the neck and back.

This is the strength exercise your body is begging for.

The spaces between your vertebrae where nerves branch out from the spinal cord can get stuck. Everyday stress, desk work, and repetitive forward posture compress those spaces over time. This moving stretch helps loosen them up.

Modified cobra works through three planes of motion: flexion and extension with a cat cow variation, a lateral rib shift side to side, and a thoracic twist. Together they encourage the upper and mid-back to move in ways most of us have stopped asking it to.

If your neck or the area between your shoulder blades is consistently cranky, the thoracic spine is often the place that needs attention first.

Move slowly. Rest if you are working through inflammation. Come back to it a few times throughout the day rather than doing too much at once.

Today is International Cat Day, so I’m putting the spotlight on Charles, the best massage therapist with paws that I know. Cats are a wonderful example of a way to be that we can strive for. They show us how to stretch often, to rest frequently, without guilt. They demonstrate a lifestyle where you massage your own body, a little bit at a time, albeit in a different way and also ask for what you need without apology.

If you have been in a session with me, you may have already met him. Charles has been known to wander into a session to lend a helping paw, or to plant himself nearby for emotional support. Charles brings the essence of healing into the room, and he simply likes to be part of the work.

This has always been one of the quiet joys of the work, the reminder that rest, play and a full range of movement (or zoomies) are not out of reach. They are both a goal and an important ingredient in how the body stays well, now and over time.

!Contest!

So, if you have been watching my self care series on YouTube, you may have spotted him making cameos therel. So here is your $10 pop quiz question:

*How many guest appearances total has Charles made in any of my Youtube videos to date? Visit Love Yourself Therapeutic Body on YT, count them up and tell me below. I’ll send a $10 massage gift card via email to the first 5 people to comment below with the correct number!

Happy International Cat Day from Charles and me.

Between each vertebra are openings where nerves exit the spinal cord. When the spine is stiff or compressed, those openings narrow which can cause numbness, tingling or pain. This exercise creates space and helps to reduce stiffness and pain.

This is a dynamic form of Cat/Cow starting from Child's Pose to open the entire spine. The extension arch activates the extensor muscles of the upper back and neck, toning and increasing blood flow. The rounded cat arch lengthens the perispinal muscles and opens the facets along the entire spine.

You can modify this for comfort with a towel or pillow under your ankles, on your thighs or under your head. No yoga experience needed. Just a mat, a few minutes, and optionally your own therapeutic kitty.
