⚡️Children’s HeartLink is no stranger to the power of international collaboration.

With contributions from our Vice President of Global Strategy and Advocacy, Bistra Zheleva, a new science advisory paper published in the Journal of the American Heart Association on Kawasaki disease highlights how international collaboration in research, diagnosis and treatment is key to optimizing outcomes.

The paper stresses that:
▪️ Early diagnosis and treatment are critical
▪️ Care has improved due to collaborative efforts in research and treatment, but access to care remain uneven
▪️ To improve access to care, collaborative efforts need to consider differences between communities, including culture and available resources

Kawasaki disease primarily affects children under five, it is a rare condition that causes inflammation of blood vessels and can lead to serious heart conditions.

At Children’s HeartLink, we believe every child deserves a healthy heart. Collaboration is one way we can make the world a better place for our children.

“I can see the sustainability of Children’s HeartLinks’ programs. It makes the work so satisfying. I can tell all my hard work is playing off. The nurses [in my training courses], over time, are asking questions—there's momentum and engagement. [The classes] are helping them with their work.” — Erin Babine, pediatric cardiac ICU nurse, Boston Children’s Hospital

In 2023, Erin started working with us to develop an educational initiative for pediatric cardiac IUC nurses in Bangladesh to advance critical care skills and knowledge.

The course has since expanded to nurses in Vietnam and Ghana and come back as a training opportunity for nurses at her own Boston Children’s Hospital.

Incredible nurses improving post-surgery care!

Led by Nurse Educator Geetha, dedicated nurses at G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital in Coimbatore, India added CPR training and a nutritional booklet to Children’s HeartLink’s Parental Education and Discharge Instructions. This ensures parents across the state can provide the best care possible to their children when recovering from heart surgery.

Geetha also trained Children’s HeartLink India Partnership Manager Samyukta Mutnury on CPR!

A child’s ability to thrive after heart surgery rests on their post-operative care. G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital - GKNMH nurses are taking the lead to improve care for children and families during this critical period of recovery.

Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital - GKNMH CEO Dr. Veluswamy and its team of pediatricians and clinical psychologist.

GKNM Hospital is developing their own neurodevelopmental program like the one at Amrita Hospital, Kochi Both hospitals are looking forward to future exchanges in knowledge and best practices as their programs grow.

As a Children’s HeartLink Center of Excellence, Amrita Hospital, Kochi is demonstrating the critical impact it has on developing regional partners and programs that transform and improve care for children with congenital heart disease.

Nurses are often closest to a child and their family undergoing heart care and play a critical role in successful outcomes.

Children’s HeartLink’s Veera Rajasekhar and Samyukta Mutnury shared how our nurse training and capacity building approach is improving outcomes in pediatric heart care at the 4th annual Society of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care conference at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, India.

The two-day workshop was held for Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care unit nurses and intensivists and included a mix of lectures and hands-on sessions.

6 nurses from our partner hospitals joined us as participants at the conference—4 from Amrita Hospital, Faridabad and 2 from Narayana Superspecialty Hospital in Howrah (Narayana Health).

We are proud that our continued efforts to train and educate nurses specializing in pediatric cardiac care and collaborating with professional societies is transforming the lives of children with congenital heart disease.

Children’s HeartLink recognizes and celebrates the importance of nurses! We equip, empower and elevate nurses as key partners on multidisciplinary teams.

Through our programs, we help nurses in underserved regions build technical, clinical and leadership skills to improve the quality of care they can provide for children with congenital heart disease and their families.

Check out our 2025 impact on nurses training and development:

▪️ Donor-supported nursing training helped reduce post-surgery mortality to 5.1% at a partner hospital

▪️ The nursing track we supported at the Pediatric Cardiac Society of India conference brought together 80 nurses, including 18 from our partner hospitals, which strengthened pediatric heart care throughout India by sharing knowledge and skills.

▪️ Our scholarships provided Brazilian nurses with the valuable opportunity to complete an intensive 18-month pediatric cardiac nursing program, expanding the country’s capacity to care for children with heart disease.

Help us invest in more nurses around the world who provide critical care to children with congenital heart disease! https://childrensheartlink.org/donate

For the first time ever, the World Heart Federation's annual report has focused on congenital heart disease! According to the report, congenital heart disease affects 1 in 50 babies, making it the most common birth defect in the world.

But it also exposes the devastating truth: that most children in the world have ZERO access to lifesaving heart care. This report reaffirms the urgent need for global attention and support for the WHA Resolution on childhood-onset heart disease, which calls on countries to develop national strategies to expand access to heart care.

We are proud to have contributed to this report. Long-time partner Dr. Krishna Kumar at Amrita Hospital, Kochi () led its development and our Vice President of Global Strategy and Advocacy, Bistra Zheleva, served as a co-author. Many of our collaborators, partners and staff are feature throughout--a testament to the collective work driving global progress for children with heart disease.
