American Society of Neuroimaging

American Society of Neuroimaging OUR MISSION
To educate, certify and represent neurologists, neuroscience clinicians and researchers who perform and interpret neuroimaging and neurosonology.

The American Society of Neuroimaging (ASN) is an international, professional organization representing neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, and other neuroscientists who are dedicated to the advancement of any technique used to image the nervous system. The ASN supports the right of qualified physicians to utilize neuroimaging modalities for the evaluation and management of their patien

ts, and the rights of patients with neurological disorders to have access to appropriate neuroimaging modalities and to physicians qualified in their use and interpretation. Marc Malkoff, MD, FAAN, FAHA, RPNI

Dr. Ryan Hakimi, President of the American Society of Neuroimaging (ASN), and Dr. Zain Guduru, ASN Board Member, represented the Society at the 2026 American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates in Chicago.

At this national forum, policies are presented, debated, and ultimately adopted or rejected—shaping the profession’s position on issues ranging from undergraduate medical education to CMS coverage of medical devices.

The ASN is one of a select group of neurological societies with a seat in the AMA. A member since 1990, the ASN delegation actively advocates for policies that enhance the quality of neuroimaging available to patients. Central to this advocacy is the principle that the physician who obtains the patient’s history, performs the physical examination, and interprets the neuroimaging study is best positioned to deliver optimal patient care.

🧠 Groundbreaking Research: The Link Between Metabolic Health and Bipolar Disorder

A new study published in Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging reveals a critical connection that is shifting how we approach psychiatric care: metabolic dysfunction is a direct driver of cognitive and memory challenges in patients with bipolar disorder.

Key takeaways from the research:

The Brain-Body Connection: Metabolic alterations—specifically insulin resistance and leptin dysregulation—are directly linked to reduced gray matter volume in brain regions responsible for memory, attention, and executive function.

Why Cognitive Symptoms Persist: This pathway explains why challenges with memory and focus often linger even when a patient's mood has completely stabilized.

The Illness Burden: A higher frequency of manic and mood episodes correlates with a more severe metabolic profile, supporting a neuroprogressive model of the disorder.

This research highlights that metabolic health is not just a peripheral concern, but a core factor in long-term brain structure and cognitive preservation. Integrating metabolic and psychiatric care will be vital for improving functional recovery and patient quality of life.

Did you know your brain's main "go" signal, glutamate, spikes after a night of poor sleep? 😴🧠 Auburn researchers used 7-Tesla MRI to show that less deep sleep correlates with higher next-day glutamate levels.

Josh*ta Majumdar, a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering, underwent 104 MRI scans over 18 months.
