North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI)

North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI) Welcome to the North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (ND EHDI) program page! Our goal is to focus on all aspects of hearing health.

The ND EHDI program has been in operation since 2000. At that time, there was an increased emphasis placed on universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS). As programs evolved from UNHS into EHDI, an additional emphasis was placed on follow-up efforts thus requiring support for both birth screening and subsequent follow-up activities. This additional focus to reduce loss to documentation/loss to fol

low-up (LTD/LTF) has brought about the need to enlist additional program partners including audiologists, child health care providers, and early childhood programs while maintaining a strong birth screening program. Following an infant from birth through diagnosis and into early intervention requires ongoing diligence and a system bridging all medical and educational communities.

Strong starts lead to bright futures 💙

In North Dakota, Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) programs help ensure every child gets the best possible start through early identification and support.

Following the 1-3-6 timeline:
👂 Screen by 1 month
🔍 Diagnose by 3 months
🤝 Early intervention by 6 months

These critical steps help support language, learning, and overall development—while connecting families to the resources and support they need along the way.

Because when we work together, we create stronger outcomes for children and families across North Dakota.

This past Friday, Kale Smith, NDEHDI Advisory Board Member, delivered the 2026 Graduate Student Address at Minot State University's 111th Commencement Ceremony where he received his Master's of Science in Special Education with an emphasis in Deaf Education.
He shared about growing up as a Deaf child and how his life experiences have shaped him into the teacher and mentor he is and will continue to be.
As a teacher at the ND School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, ND Hands & Voices Board Member, and Deaf Mentor, Kale has a large impact on the d/Deaf/Hard of Hearing youth in North Dakota.
We couldn't be more proud of his accomplishments and thank him for his hard work and dedication.

In North Dakota, collaboration is key to helping every child thrive. 💙
When Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) and IDEA Part C programs work together, they create a stronger, more connected system of care—from newborn hearing screening through age three. By sharing data and coordinating services, we can better track progress in language development and ensure families receive the support they need every step of the way.
This kind of partnership doesn’t just improve systems—it changes outcomes.
Together, we’re building a future where children with hearing differences and their families in North Dakota have the tools, support, and opportunities to succeed.
